SwipePad - Quick Launch for Android

The Convenience of App Launchers on Smartphones
A significant advantage of modern smartphones is the vast availability of applications. While the quality of apps varies, users typically discover several they utilize frequently on a daily basis. This leads to the consideration of efficient methods for launching these applications.
Certainly, placing numerous icons directly onto the homescreen is an option, requiring a return to the homescreen each time a new application is needed. However, most launchers provide multiple homescreens – often five or more – necessitating scrolling to locate the desired icon. This can prove cumbersome, particularly for applications used consistently.
Potential Issues with Launchers
Launchers are not without their potential drawbacks. Instances of launcher crashes can occur, potentially disrupting access to essential functions. A recent experience involved utilizing the search button to initiate voice search, accessing a browser, and ultimately installing a new launcher via the market – a process that was far from ideal. A utility like SwipePad could have mitigated such a situation.
Introducing SwipePad: A Quick-Launch Solution
SwipePad functions as a rapid application launcher designed for Android devices running version 2.1 and higher. It operates continuously in the background, indicated by an icon in the notification area. Activation is achieved by touching a configurable edge of the screen, which then displays a grid of twelve buttons.
The empty space around the grid is intentionally designed to provide a comfortable resting point for a finger while searching for the desired icon. Selecting an icon involves sliding a finger towards it, causing it to highlight in blue:
Releasing the finger at this point launches the application. However, maintaining contact for two seconds changes the button's color to orange:
SwipePad Menu Options
Upon reaching the orange state, releasing the finger presents a menu with several options:
The first two options allow assignment of either an application or a shortcut to the selected slot. The "AppLauncher" option is a paid add-on intended to expand the number of launchable applications. However, the core appeal of SwipePad lies in its simplicity and minimalistic design. The "Tasking" option enables binding the button to a recent task switcher, available for a small fee. This add-on was purchased and will be examined further.
The "Hide" function allows complete removal of a button from the grid, preventing accidental activation. Here's an example of the grid with a hidden button:
Configuring SwipePad Preferences
The preferences menu offers customization options:
The red strips visually represent the "swipe areas" – the edges of the screen that activate SwipePad. On the tested device, the right area triggers SwipePad itself, while the left launches the Tasking add-on for quick task switching. The available swipe areas are extensive:
Subsequent updates introduced "bottom half" options for both the right and left edges. The "top edge" option was likely omitted due to its common association with the notification area on most devices.
Exploring Paid Add-ons
The developer employs a commendable business model: the application is entirely free of advertisements and intrusive prompts, functioning effectively without any add-ons. However, users can support development and unlock additional features through optional purchases.
The Tasking add-on was selected, as the other options – AppLauncher and MoreSpace – were considered potentially complicating. The Tasking interface is as follows:
Activated by swiping from the top-left edge of the screen, it functions similarly to the standard launcher but with a distinct context menu:
Long-pressing an app within the Recent Tasks list reveals carefully selected and powerful options.
Mastering SwipePad for Optimal Speed
Proficiency with SwipePad increases with practice, leveraging muscle memory. Memorizing the positions of twelve applications allows for swift activation through a single, intuitive motion, often without consciously registering the icon being pressed – akin to touch-typing. With dedicated use, SwipePad offers a remarkably fast method for launching applications, rivaled only by direct binding to a hardware button.
