Swell Launches Voice App for Asynchronous Communication

A New Voice in Social Networking: Introducing Swell

While Clubhouse has garnered attention as a leading audio social platform, a startup based in San Francisco, known as Swell, is introducing its own application for both iOS and Android devices, centering around voice-based interactions.

The Key Difference: Asynchronous Audio

A significant distinction lies in the nature of conversations. Clubhouse emphasizes real-time engagement, requiring immediate listening or potential loss of content. Conversely, Swell prioritizes asynchronous comments. Users contribute individual audio segments, capped at five minutes, accompanied by images and links.

Other users can then explore, listen to, and respond with their own audio contributions at their convenience.

Features Beyond Individual Clips

Swell facilitates audio-only group discussions and private exchanges. It also introduces “Swellcasts,” which are essentially concise podcasts or Clubhouse-style dialogues organized as comment threads rather than spontaneous discussions.

Users have the option to promote their public content through dedicated pages on the Swellcast website.

The Team Behind Swell

The company is spearheaded by Sudha Varadarajan and Arish Ali, a husband-and-wife duo. Prior to Swell, they established and subsequently sold the e-commerce firm Skava to Infosys.

Democratizing Audio Content Creation

Varadarajan, who serves as the startup’s CEO, characterizes the application as an effort to broaden access to audio content creation. The platform aims to eliminate the need for specialized equipment or extensive production expertise, enabling users to discuss a wide range of topics.

She noted an example of a user recording a Swellcast while discussing their front lawn.

A Response to Social Media Trends

Varadarajan indicated that Swell’s development wasn’t solely a reaction to Clubhouse. Rather, it stemmed from a broader concern regarding the increasing polarization and decline in authentic dialogue observed on existing social media platforms.

Asynchronous Communication and Conversation Quality

While acknowledging that audio platforms aren’t immune to negativity, Varadarajan posits that the asynchronous nature of Swell enhances the quality of interactions. The delay allows for more thoughtful contributions, as “People really think about what they’re going to say.”

A Sustainable Business Model

The company intends to avoid reliance on advertising revenue. Instead, Swell plans to generate income through the provision of premium tools and paid Swellcasts.

Wider Launch and Upcoming Event

Swell was initially accessible to a limited user base. Today marks a broader launch, coinciding with the company’s participation in the virtual SXSW conference, where they will present on the evolving role of voice in online interactions.
