Kompas Launches Green-Tinted Sustainability Fund

Kompas Launches $160 Million Fund for Sustainability and Tech Innovation

Kompas, a firm with offices in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Tel Aviv, is now equipped with $160 million in funding. This capital will be strategically allocated to areas of focus including sustainability and technological advancements within the construction, real estate, and manufacturing sectors.

The new fund is particularly interested in providing support to companies in their early stages of development. Investment amounts will range from $1 million to $5 million per company.

Fund Management and Investment Focus

The fund’s operations will be overseen by partners Sebastian Peck and Talia Rafaeli. Their objective is to support groundbreaking innovations that accelerate the integration of digital technologies and industrial automation across real estate, construction, and manufacturing.

A key priority for the fund is the reduction of both waste generation and carbon dioxide emissions.

Driving Forces Behind the Fund’s Strategy

The fund’s investment strategy is largely influenced by the increasing regulatory demands for reduced CO2 emissions. Furthermore, there's a growing demand for more environmentally friendly building practices.

Experienced Leadership

The management team at Kompas brings relevant experience from the corporate venture capital arena, specifically within the automotive industry – a sector that has also undergone significant shifts towards sustainability. Sebastian Peck formerly led the corporate VC division of Jaguar Land Rover.

Talia Rafaeli previously managed investments for Porsche’s VC arm, focusing on opportunities in Europe and Israel.

Target Startup Areas

The fund is actively seeking startups that align with one of three core investment areas:

  • Smart, sustainable and healthy homes — This includes advanced materials, smart home technology, IoT solutions, and climate technology.
  • Business model and service innovation in real estate and construction — Focusing on lifecycle asset optimisation, architectural and building design, innovative construction methods, and enhanced customer experiences.
  • The digital enterprise — Areas of interest include industrial automation, digital supply chain management, cybersecurity, enterprise software, and the circular economy.

Vision for a Sustainable Future

“Addressing the critical challenge of climate change necessitates a reimagining of how we approach the design and construction of our future cities, commercial spaces, and homes,” states Sebastian Peck.

“Currently, the building sector accounts for 39% of global CO2 emissions, and construction and demolition contribute to 30% of waste generated in Europe. Radical change is required to meet environmental obligations, presenting substantial opportunities for technological innovation and novel business models,” he continues. “Our aim is to achieve top-tier financial returns while supporting founders who are making a tangible impact on our industry.”

The Role of Venture Capital

“Venture capital is essential for funding the development of innovative solutions to lessen the climate impact of modern industry and promote more sustainable business practices,” explains Talia Rafaeli.

“We are enthusiastic about beginning this venture and supporting the ambitious founders who will drive this transformation.”
