Subaru Solterra: First Electric Vehicle - Release Date

Subaru's Entry into the Electric Vehicle Market

Anticipation is building for Subaru enthusiasts eager to embrace electric mobility. The Japanese car manufacturer has recently unveiled further specifics regarding its inaugural all-electric vehicle, slated for release in 2022.

Introducing the Solterra

Subaru’s first EV will be known as the Solterra, a name that resonates with the brand’s association with outdoor exploration and the natural world. Consistent with Subaru’s reputation, this initial fully electric offering will be an SUV equipped with the company’s highly-praised all-wheel-drive system.

A Collaborative Platform

The Solterra is engineered upon a novel platform jointly developed with Toyota. Toyota intends to utilize this same platform for its bZ4X crossover, a vehicle whose name is somewhat complex (bZ signifies “beyond zero”).

Design Expectations

To date, Subaru has published only two preview images. Considering the shared engineering with the Toyota bZ4X, the Solterra is anticipated to present a more understated and conservatively styled iteration of Toyota’s upcoming, futuristic electric crossover.

Size and Dimensions

Beyond these initial details, comprehensive information remains limited. Should the Solterra closely resemble the bZ4X, it is expected to have a profile similar to a slightly compressed RAV4, potentially positioned in size between the Crosstrek and the Forester models.

Expanding Subaru's Eco-Friendly Lineup

This dedicated EV will augment Subaru’s existing plug-in hybrid Crosstrek, which has been available since 2014 and currently represents the company’s sole option for environmentally aware consumers. The Solterra is scheduled to become available for purchase in 2022 across the United States, Canada, China, Europe, and Japan.

The launch signifies Subaru’s commitment to providing electric alternatives to its customer base.
