Stripe Helps iOS Developers Bypass Apple's App Store Fees

Stripe Enables iOS Developers to Circumvent Apple's App Store Fees
Stripe, a leading payments processing software company, is now providing tools for iOS application developers to bypass the standard commission charged by Apple on App Store transactions.
Ruling in Apple-Epic Trial Paves the Way
This move follows Wednesday’s decision in the Apple-Epic Games antitrust case. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers criticized Apple’s previous restrictions on external payment links within apps, as she had previously ruled against such limitations.
Stripe promptly responded by releasing documentation detailing how iOS developers can avoid the Apple commission.
Stripe's Guide for Developers
Michael Luo, a product manager at Stripe, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that his team had created a guide to assist iOS developers in accepting payments through Stripe outside of their applications.
This allows developers to capitalize on the newly established option resulting from the court’s ruling.
Apple's Limited Concessions
While Apple did permit links to external websites for purchases, the commission reduction was minimal – only 3% off the 30% standard rate.
Furthermore, Apple implemented warning screens intended to dissuade customers from paying developers directly, citing potential security risks.
Judge Rogers' Directive
Judge Rogers determined that Apple’s policy failed to align with the intent or specifics of her prior injunction.
She mandated that the company revise its policies immediately to fully comply with the court’s decision.
How Stripe Checkout Works
Stripe’s documentation outlines the process for developers to integrate a link within their app.
This link directs customers to a secure, Stripe-hosted payments page for digital goods, creating a new checkout experience.
Cost Comparison: Stripe vs. Apple
Utilizing Stripe requires developers to manage their own payment pages and checkout processes, which adds complexity.
However, Stripe’s standard fees – 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction – represent a significantly more affordable alternative compared to Apple’s 30% commission, or even the 15% offered to qualifying apps.
Positive Reception from Developers
Stripe’s announcement has garnered substantial attention, receiving thousands of likes on X from enthusiastic developers.
Support from David Heinemeier Hansson
David Heinemeier Hansson, creator of Ruby on Rails and co-owner of 37Signals (Basecamp, HEY), a long-time critic of Apple, lauded Stripe’s solution.
Hansson has previously clashed with Apple over the rejection of HEY’s apps due to their avoidance of Apple’s in-app purchase system.
New Business Opportunities
Hansson believes the policy change enabling external payments will unlock new possibilities for businesses on the App Store.
He stated that the previous 30% commission rendered certain business models unviable.
“Apple’s loss in court is immediately opening up a whole new world for app developers,” he explained. “Entire business models were impossible under the old 30% regime.”
