Streamlit 1.0: Open Source Data App Building Tool Released

Streamlit Reaches Version 1.0, Empowering Data Scientists

For the last two years, Streamlit, a company established by experienced machine learning professionals, has been developing an open source project. This project aims to assist data scientists in creating web applications for exploring data within their machine learning models.

Today, the company announced the project has officially reached version 1.0.

A Milestone Achievement

“We initially released the first version of Streamlit two years ago,” stated CEO and co-founder Adrien Treuille in an interview with TechCrunch. “This release signifies our confidence in its readiness and reflects our immense pride in the project.”

Treuille also highlighted a robust roadmap for future development, driven by the expanding community and increasing adoption.

Addressing a Critical Need

The founders recognized a gap in the market based on their own experiences. They understood the necessity for a tool enabling data scientists to effectively share their data insights with colleagues across the organization.

This initial hypothesis has been thoroughly validated as the product has been downloaded by thousands of users.

Community-Driven Development

“The open source product is freely accessible, with all source code publicly available for review,” Treuille explained. “It benefits from a large and active community that contributes by identifying bugs, suggesting improvements, and even submitting code contributions.”

Growth and Accessibility

Amanda Kelly, co-founder and COO, noted the significant growth in user base. They’ve transitioned from a small group of initial users to a substantial community.

“The ease of use is a key factor,” Kelly stated. “If you possess even a basic understanding of Python – and tens of millions of people do – you can quickly begin using Streamlit.”

This accessibility allows users to rapidly transform data and APIs into actionable insights.

Widespread Adoption and Recognition

The company reports that over half of the Fortune 50 companies are currently utilizing the open source product.

Furthermore, Tyler Richards, a data scientist at Facebook, independently authored a book detailing how to effectively use Streamlit.

Future Plans: Commercial Cloud Service

In addition to the open source project, Streamlit has been developing a commercial cloud service.

This service, currently in private beta with over 700 companies, is expected to be publicly available before the end of the year, allowing for a swift market entry.

Funding and History

Founded in 2018, Streamlit has successfully raised $62 million in funding, according to Crunchbase data. This includes a $35 million Series B round secured in April.
