Station F Launches New FemTech Program for Early-Stage Startups

Station F, a Paris-based startup campus, has announced the launch of a new initiative aimed at supporting early-stage companies – the FemTech Program. This program is designed to highlight and facilitate the development of startups focused on the femtech sector.

A Hub for Innovation in France

Originally a rail freight depot, Station F has undergone extensive renovations to become a leading technology hub in France. It serves as a central location for the tech community.

The campus fosters collaboration through partnerships with venture capital firms, public administrations, companies, and universities. These entities operate their own incubators within Station F’s expansive facilities.

Expanding In-House Programs

In addition to hosting external incubators, Station F also runs its own programs. The Fighters Program supports entrepreneurs from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Founders Program assists companies in their initial stages of development.

The FemTech Program represents a third in-house initiative, specifically targeting companies innovating in female health and women’s sexual health.

Addressing Challenges in the FemTech Space

“We identified a significant opportunity and a pressing need for support within this sector,” stated Roxanne Varza, director of Station F. “Femtech remains a relatively unknown and often stigmatized area.”

Despite substantial market potential, femtech startups encounter unique obstacles. A primary challenge is the underrepresentation of women in the tech ecosystem, particularly among investors.

This can lead to a lack of focus on products and services designed for women’s health. Furthermore, many venture capital firms face restrictions due to “vice clauses” in their investment agreements.

Advocacy and Community Building

These clauses often prohibit investment in companies dealing with sensitive areas like sex, drugs, or alcohol. “Startups have shared their difficulties with us, and we aim to advocate on their behalf,” Varza explained.

A core objective of the program is to establish a strong community where femtech founders can connect and support each other. This addresses a key pain point identified by participating startups.

Program Benefits and Resources

Station F will offer a range of resources, including workshops, introductions to potential partners, and dedicated office hours. Founders of established femtech companies like Clue and Ava will lead upcoming workshops.

Initial Pilot and Application Process

During the first half of 2021, Station F conducted a pilot program with several femtech startups, including Intimately, TalQ, Puissante, and Sonio.

Applications for the first official cohort of the FemTech Program are now being accepted through the Station F website and will remain open for one month.

Here is a list of the startups that participated in the initial, unannounced batch:
