Starlink New Rectangular Dish: Smaller & Lighter

Starlink Unveils a New, Compact User Terminal
Starlink has recently launched a new user terminal option for inclusion with its standard starter kits. Initial reports from The Verge detail the introduction of a rectangular antenna design.
This new terminal is notably smaller and lighter when compared to the original circular model. Successful operation requires users to mount the antenna in a location offering an unobstructed view of the sky, such as a rooftop.
Dimensions and Weight Comparison
The initial Starlink dish measured 23 inches in diameter. In contrast, the rectangular version measures 12 inches wide and 19 inches in length.
Weight has also been significantly reduced. The new terminal weighs only 9.2 pounds, representing almost a 50% reduction compared to the circular antenna.
This reduced size provides users with increased flexibility regarding potential installation locations.
Expanded Accessory Options
The rectangular terminal is accompanied by a wider range of accessories. These include a ground-mountable pole, eliminating the necessity for rooftop installation.
Starlink Service and Hardware Costs
Starlink began as a beta service in late 2020, offering satellite internet access for $99 per month.
The initial hardware kit, including the antenna, stand, power supply, and WiFi router, was priced at $499.
Gwynne Shotwell, President of SpaceX, previously stated the original dish cost $3,000 to manufacture.
Despite cost reductions to $1,300, the company continued to sell the kit at a loss.
Future Cost Projections
Shotwell indicated that the newer terminals released this year would cost approximately half the price of the original models.
Further cost reductions, potentially halving the price again, were also suggested.
However, The Verge points out that the hardware kit remains at $499, even with the inclusion of the rectangular antenna.
SpaceX has not yet announced any plans for a price reduction in the future.
Currently, US customers ordering a new kit can select the rectangular terminal at the existing $499 price point.
