Starbucks and Amazon Launch Cashierless Store in New York City

A collaborative venture has been initiated between Starbucks and Amazon, resulting in the debut of a cashierless retail space in NYC. The new store, situated on 59th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues, integrates Starbucks’ mobile ordering system with Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology.

A Hybrid Retail Experience

The store’s concept draws parallels to both a traditional Starbucks café and an Amazon Go store, representing the foundation for the e-commerce leader’s cashierless technology.

Access to the lounge area is facilitated through several methods. Customers can utilize an “In-Store Code” within the Amazon Shopping app, scan their credit cards, or employ Amazon One for palm-based entry at the provided terminals.

Inside, shoppers will discover a compact Amazon Go market. This market features a carefully chosen assortment of popular items from both Starbucks and Amazon.

Items selected from the shelves are automatically added to a virtual cart. Charges are applied to the customer’s account upon exiting the store, mirroring the process found in other Just Walk Out enabled locations.

Expansion of Amazon’s Cashierless Technology

Amazon has been actively broadening the reach of its cashierless technology over the last eighteen months. Collaborations with airport retailers have introduced the checkout-free experience to travelers.

Furthermore, the first full-scale Amazon Fresh grocery store incorporating this technology opened in June. The technology has also been deployed in select Whole Foods stores.

Recently, Amazon extended licensing rights for the technology to Sainsbury’s, a prominent UK supermarket chain. This partnership with Starbucks signifies another advancement in making Just Walk Out technology more widely available.

Future Expansion Plans

Starbucks and Amazon have plans to launch a total of three jointly operated stores within the next year. The initial location is now open on 59th Street.

A second store is slated to open within The New York Times Building, located at 40th Street and 8th Avenue. Currently, residents of New York City can experience the innovative concept firsthand at the first location.
