Stanford Robot Hand Inspired by Geckos to Pick Fruit

Stanford's Gecko-Inspired Robotic Gripper Advances
Significant advancements have been made by Stanford University in the development of its robotic hand, modeled after geckos. A version of this “gecko gripper” was deployed to the International Space Station in May to evaluate its effectiveness in tasks such as satellite repair and orbital debris collection.
New Application: Delicate Object Handling
Researchers at the university have recently published findings in Science Robotics, showcasing a practical, earthbound application for this technology: the precise handling of fragile items. Traditional rigid robot hands often struggle with this task, prompting the exploration of various alternatives, including soft robotic grippers.
Introducing FarmHand
The team has developed FarmHand, a four-fingered gripper that draws inspiration from both the human hand’s dexterity and the gecko’s remarkable gripping abilities. Stanford highlights that the gecko’s adhesive surface achieves a secure grip through microscopic flaps, utilizing Van der Waals forces – a subtle intermolecular attraction stemming from electron distribution variations.
Addressing the "Heirloom Tomato Problem"
The researchers identified a key challenge, termed the “heirloom tomato problem.” Conventional grippers excel at repeatedly picking up uniform, rigid objects. However, they lack the adaptability needed for diverse items.
FarmHand has demonstrated success in handling a variety of objects during testing, including grapes, raw eggs, basketballs, and plates.
Dexterity and Strength Combined
“Robotic hands often demonstrate a power grasp and a precision grasp, suggesting a full range of capabilities,” explains Wilson Ruotolo, a graduate student in the Biomimetics and Dextrous Manipulation Lab. “Our goal was to design manipulators that are simultaneously dexterous and robust.”
This new approach aims to bridge the gap between delicate manipulation and the strength required for more demanding tasks.
