Spotify Playlist Transitions: Add Custom Effects | New Feature

Spotify Introduces Enhanced Playlist Customization with Transitions

Spotify is rolling out a new capability for its subscribers, enabling the creation of highly personalized and professionally-sounding playlists. Launched on Tuesday, this feature centers around custom transitions.

Users can now choose to have transitions between tracks applied automatically, or they can meticulously craft their own transitions. A variety of preset options are available, including fade, rise, and blend effects, alongside other stylistic choices.

How to Utilize the New Feature

To begin utilizing the transition feature, simply open any existing playlist. From the toolbar, select “Mix” to access the editing interface.

While customizing transitions, adjustments can also be made to volume levels, equalization settings, and various effects. The waveform and beat data are provided to assist in identifying optimal transition points within each track.

Spotify will automatically display the key and beats per minute (BPM) for each song. This is intended to simplify the mixing process for those new to audio manipulation.

These new options are designed to appeal to both dedicated playlist curators and casual music listeners. To date, nearly 9 billion playlists have been created collectively on the Spotify platform.

This rollout builds upon other recent updates Spotify has implemented, all aimed at granting users greater control over their listening experience. These include tools for playlist management, genre customization for Discover Weekly, track snoozing, voice commands for the AI DJ, and more.

The feature also positions Spotify as a competitor to Apple Music’s forthcoming AutoMix functionality, currently available in the iOS 26 developer beta, which promises a “DJ-like” mixing experience.

Spotify Premium subscribers who have access to the transitions feature can save their mixes and share them with friends via social media. Collaborative playlists, allowing multiple subscribers to contribute to a single mix, are also supported.

The mixing functionality can be easily toggled on or off with the “mix” option, enabling a quick return to a standard playlist format when the listening context changes.

Spotify suggests that the mixing feature performs best with genres designed for seamless transitions, such as house and techno music, which naturally lend themselves to blending.

Mixes can be further personalized with custom cover art, as well as newly introduced stickers and labels specifically designed for mixed playlists.

The custom transition feature is now available to the majority of eligible Spotify Premium users globally. A limited rollout is in progress for some markets within the APAC region.

The feature is being deployed gradually to users who have updated their Spotify app on either iOS or Android devices.
