Collaboration with Industry Leaders
The streaming service is collaborating with Sony, Universal, Warner, and Merlin to create what they term “responsible AI” products.
These tools will not only uphold copyright regulations but will also empower artists to decide whether or not to permit the utilization of AI technologies.
Current AI Offerings and Recent Concerns
While specific operational details remain undisclosed, Spotify currently provides generative AI features to its users.
Examples include the AI DJ, which curates personalized song selections, and functionalities enabling users to generate playlists through AI prompts.
Recently, the platform faced scrutiny following the viral success of music created by an AI-generated band, sparking debate about the potential displacement of human artists.
Policy Updates and Labeling Initiatives
Last month, Spotify revised its AI policy to combat spam and misuse.
This included addressing users who mass-upload AI-generated content, create duplicates, and manipulate the platform’s search and recommendation algorithms.
Furthermore, Spotify announced its adoption of the DDEX music labeling system to indicate instances where AI played a role in the music creation process.
Artist Control and Compensation
The forthcoming GenAI features build upon this commitment by granting artists the option to participate in AI tool usage.
The anticipated system will likely enable artists to identify when their music is incorporated into AI-generated tracks and receive appropriate compensation.
Spotify intends to extend this system to encompass other rights holders and distributors in the future.
