Spotdraft Leverages AI for Contract Management - Streamline Your Process

The Increasing Adoption of AI in the Legal Field

Recent surveys indicate a growing trend of artificial intelligence integration among legal professionals. A recent survey conducted by Clio, a legal technology firm, revealed that 79% of law firms utilized some form of AI for case management in the previous year. This represents a significant increase from the 19% reported in 2023.

Despite initial reservations regarding the technology, interest from in-house counsel is also rising. Data suggests that close to half of all attorneys believe AI implementation can lead to substantial cost reductions within their departments.

SpotDraft: A Rising Legal Tech Provider

The surge in demand has spurred the emergence of numerous legal technology companies. SpotDraft, a relatively new entrant, specializes in the development of contract automation and management software.

Established in 2017, SpotDraft provides tools designed to streamline contracting processes for in-house legal teams.

The Founding and Inspiration Behind SpotDraft

Shashank Bijapur, Madhav Bhagat, and Rohith Salim were key members of SpotDraft’s founding team. Bijapur, who serves as the company’s CEO, explains that the concept for SpotDraft originated during his time as an associate at the Bengaluru-based law firm White & Case.

His experience handling a large volume of corporate contracts highlighted the need for a more efficient solution.

SpotDraft’s AI-Powered Features

SpotDraft’s platform leverages AI to extract crucial details and clauses from contracts. This functionality provides summaries of modifications and recommendations for subsequent actions.

A centralized task management system displays upcoming deadlines, renewal notifications, and both individual and team assignments, aiming to enhance organizational efficiency.

ClickThrough provides a dedicated, centralized repository for all contract agreements, enabling users to search and generate reports.

Competitive Landscape and Growth

SpotDraft faces competition from established vendors such as LinkSquares, Lexion (owned by DocuSign), Evisort (from Workday), and Filevine.

However, according to Bijapur, the company is successfully maintaining its position in the market. Currently, SpotDraft serves approximately 400 customers.

The company experienced a 169% year-over-year revenue increase in the last fiscal year.

Future Outlook and Investment

“We anticipate that 2025 will be a pivotal year for the SpotDraft team,” stated Bijapur. “We are deeply committed to expanding the integration of AI within our product to empower legal teams to achieve greater efficiency and foster innovation.”

Investors appear confident in SpotDraft’s growth potential. The company recently announced a $54 million Series B funding round led by Vertex Growth Singapore and Trident Partners, with participation from Xeed VC, Arkam Ventures, Prosus Ventures, and Premji Invest.

The legal tech sector has seen a resurgence of funding following a period of financial challenges. In 2024, venture capital investment in legal tech reached $2.6 billion, a significant increase from the less than $1 billion invested in 2023.

Expansion Plans and New Developments

This new funding, bringing the total raised to over $80 million, will be allocated to research and development, market expansion, and the growth of SpotDraft’s 250-person workforce across its headquarters in New York and its Bengaluru location.

Bijapur revealed that SpotDraft is currently developing an “agentic solution” designed to help in-house counsel achieve “strategic business outcomes.”

While specific details remain undisclosed, AI is expected to play a central role in this new solution.

“The conventional legal model often operates on a ‘dollars by the hour’ basis, where inefficiencies are frequently inherent,” Bijapur explained. “This agentic solution will integrate with other tools used by the in-house legal team, reducing the time required for learning and configuration, and allowing them to concentrate on strategic initiatives.”
