Customize Firefox's about:blank Page - Add Spice!

Revitalizing Firefox's Blank Page

The default blank tab in Firefox often presents a stark, uninspiring white canvas. However, this can be easily transformed with the aid of the Stylish extension. Stylish allows users to apply custom styles to webpages, including the "about:blank" page, and even incorporate images for a visually appealing experience.

Creating Personalized Styles

Assuming the Stylish extension is already installed in your Firefox browser, begin by clicking its icon in the status bar. Select "Write Style" and then choose "Blank Style" to initiate the creation process.

Provide a descriptive name for your new style. Then, copy and paste the following code snippet into the style editor. This code will establish a blank white page with a centrally positioned image.

@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);

@-moz-document url("about:blank") { * {

   background:

      url("data:image/png;base64,INSERT BASE64 ENCODED IMAGE HERE");

      margin:0px;

      background-position:center;

      background-attachment:fixed;

      background-repeat:no-repeat;

   }

}

To integrate images into your custom style, you have two primary options:

  • You can directly link to an image hosted on a web server by substituting the existing url() line in the CSS with a URL like this: url(http://www.server.com/link_to_image.png);
  • Alternatively, you can encode an image into base64 text and embed it directly within the stylesheet. This is often the preferred method for most users.

Numerous online converters are available to facilitate base64 encoding, such as the one found at Binary File to Base64 Encoder / Translator - greywyvern.com. Simply convert your image to base64 and paste the resulting text into your stylesheet where indicated.

Remember to adjust the image/png portion of the code if your image is in a different format. Most conversion tools will provide the correct format specification.

Exploring User-Created Styles

If you prefer not to create your own style from scratch, a wealth of pre-designed styles are available for download.
