SpaceX successfully deployed a GPS III satellite for the U.S. Space Force, marking the second next-generation GPS III satellite launched for the U.S. military this year. A prior launch occurred in June, representing the third GPS III satellite overall placed into orbit by SpaceX. This recent mission, the fourth in the series, will enhance GPS navigational accuracy for the United States, incorporating advanced anti-jamming features to safeguard against signal disruption.

For this particular launch, SpaceX utilized a completely new Falcon 9 first-stage rocket and achieved a successful recovery of the booster through a precise landing on a drone ship positioned in the Atlantic Ocean. The company also verified that the payload reached its intended orbit and is currently maneuvering towards the designated release point for final orbital positioning of the GPS spacecraft.

The mission originated from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and represented a second effort to deliver this specific payload. An initial launch attempt at the start of September was aborted when two engines ignited prematurely, triggering an automatic shutdown of the launch sequence just two seconds before liftoff. Following an investigation, SpaceX determined that trace amounts of a protective masking substance used on engine parts had contaminated the fuel lines. This finding prompted adjustments to the company’s engine production and quality control procedures.

The issue also led to a postponement of SpaceX’s planned Crew-1 launch for NASA. Therefore, today’s successful launch serves as further confirmation that the upcoming, historically significant flight carrying an operational crew to the International Space Station – consisting of three NASA astronauts and one from JAXA – remains on track for November 14, assuming no further complications arise.
