SpaceX Starbase Crane Collapse: Officials Remain Silent

Crane Incident at SpaceX’s Starbase Facility Raises Transparency Concerns

A crane experienced a collapse at the SpaceX rocket facility located in South Texas this week. The newly established city of Starbase has, however, refrained from releasing any information regarding potential injuries.

Details of the Collapse

On June 23rd, a crane involved in the cleanup of remnants from a recent SpaceX rocket explosion failed and collapsed at the launch site. The incident was documented by Lab Padre, a frequent videographer and photographer of the facility. However, the footage was captured from a considerable distance, precluding a clear assessment of any harm or endangerment to personnel.

SpaceX has not issued a public statement acknowledging the crane’s collapse and did not respond to inquiries from TechCrunch for clarification. This lack of communication aligns with the company’s typical practice of remaining reserved, despite publicly reporting on spaceflight anomalies, such as the destruction of its Starship rockets.

Starbase’s Silence and Financial Ties

The SpaceX facility now operates within the boundaries of Starbase, Texas, a recently incorporated city. Following a previous Starship rocket explosion on a test stand last week, Starbase officials briefly addressed the event on X (formerly Twitter).

Notably, no announcement has been made concerning the crane collapse, and the city has disregarded direct requests for information. TechCrunch reached out to Starbase’s media contact, the mayor, both city commissioners, the city administrator, and the city clerk this week, but received no response to multiple inquiries about the incident.

This situation represents an initial test of Starbase’s commitment to transparency, particularly given its governance by a SpaceX executive and its role as a hub for the company and its employees – numbering over 200. Furthermore, Starbase is financially reliant on SpaceX; a $1.5 million loan from the company was recently finalized to support city operations through September 2025.

The Formation of Starbase

The concept of establishing a city named Starbase was initially proposed by Elon Musk in 2021. However, it wasn’t until May of this year that the city officially came into being. The predominantly SpaceX employee population overwhelmingly voted in favor of incorporation.

Bobby Peden, SpaceX’s Vice President of “Texas Test and Launch,” was appointed as mayor. Jordan Buss, the company’s Senior Director of Environmental, Health, and Safety, assumed the role of commissioner, alongside Jenna Petrzelka, a former SpaceX employee who also became a commissioner.

Recent City Actions and Access Restrictions

These officials have been actively shaping the new city in recent weeks. Residents within a proposed “mixed use district” received notice in late May that they might “lose the right to continue using” their properties.

Additionally, the city began installing gates at SpaceX’s request to restrict access, citing safety concerns. According to Valley Central, Buss stated that Starbase would grant access to outsiders “if there’s a need to be in the city” and would provide “access codes” to emergency services like ambulances, firefighters, and law enforcement.

Emergency Response and OSHA Investigation

It remains uncertain whether emergency services were required following Tuesday’s crane collapse. The Cameron County Sheriff’s Department informed TechCrunch that they did not receive any calls from Starbase around the time of the incident. Requests for comment from local fire departments in Brownsville and Cameron County went unanswered.

Currently, the only confirmed information regarding the collapse, beyond the visual evidence, is that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has initiated an investigation, as reported by CNBC.

SpaceX’s Safety Record and OSHA Relations

SpaceX has a documented history of worker safety concerns. However, OSHA investigations are often lengthy processes, and the agency’s resources have been reduced due to cuts related to Musk’s DOGE project. Moreover, Musk’s companies have historically maintained a strained relationship with OSHA.

In 2019, Tesla reportedly denied OSHA inspectors entry to its Nevada factory, even when accompanied by a sheriff’s deputy and a warrant signed by a judge.
