SpaceX Launches Starlink Satellites from California

On Monday evening, SpaceX successfully launched a Falcon 9 rocket. The payload consisted of 51 Starlink satellites, departing from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 8:55 PM PDT (11:55 PM EDT).

This mission marked a significant first for the Starlink constellation. It represented the initial launch originating from the west coast of the United States.

New Orbital Trajectory and Expanded Coverage

Furthermore, this launch initiated the second phase of Starlink satellite deployment. The satellites are being placed into a revised orbital path.

This new trajectory is designed to broaden the network’s reach. Service will be extended to previously unserved areas, notably including Northern Canada and sections of Northern Europe.

Reusable Rocket and Current Network Status

The Falcon 9 booster utilized for this mission was not new. It had previously been employed in nine other missions, including seven prior Starlink launches.

To date, SpaceX has launched approximately 1,800 Starlink satellites. Customer coverage has been ongoing through a beta program for over a year.

As of August, SpaceX reported shipping around 100,000 user terminals. Currently, over 90,000 users are actively utilizing the Starlink service.

The company also noted a substantial backlog, with approximately 500,000 kit orders currently outstanding.

Future Expansion Plans

SpaceX intends to significantly increase the size of the Starlink constellation. This expansion is crucial for extending the global availability of the service.

The ultimate goal is to establish a constellation comprising nearly 30,000 satellites. This would enable dependable, worldwide broadband access for customers.
