The initial kit incorporates a user terminal – essentially a specialized dish – that establishes a connection with the satellites, enabling broadband service. Musk openly acknowledged that the company is presently operating at a loss on each terminal sold. “Currently, the terminal’s cost to us surpasses $1,000, and consequently, I am absorbing that cost difference,” he explained.

SpaceX is actively developing a next-generation terminal. This new version aims to deliver comparable functionality but with reduced manufacturing expenses.

Significant Investment and Competitive Landscape

The overall financial commitment to the Starlink project is estimated to fall between $5 billion and $10 billion initially, potentially escalating to $30 billion as the company pursues ongoing enhancements and maintains a competitive edge against advancements in cellular technologies.

Current Status and Expansion

Musk shared these insights during a virtual keynote address at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. He also revealed that Starlink is projected to exceed 500,000 subscribers within the coming year.

Currently, the service is operational in approximately 12 countries, with further expansions planned on a monthly basis.

Advancements in Satellite Technology

SpaceX is nearing the launch of satellite version 1.5, which will incorporate laser intersatellite links. These links will ensure uninterrupted connectivity in high-latitude and polar regions.

The launch of version 2 is anticipated next year, promising a substantial increase in capabilities, as Musk highlighted.

Starship is central to Musk’s ambitious goals of establishing a lunar base or a Martian city. The company anticipates conducting the initial orbital launch attempt with Starship within the next few months.

SpaceX has submitted a request to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for authorization to operate Starlink terminals aboard the new spacecraft. This is intended to demonstrate high-speed data transmission capabilities between Starship and ground stations throughout the mission.
