Spacecoin: Blockchain Transactions Beamed Through Space

Spacecoin Advances Decentralized Communications with Successful Satellite Data Transmission

Spacecoin has announced a significant achievement in its efforts to develop a decentralized communications infrastructure. The company aims to eventually provide a competitive alternative to services like SpaceX’s Starlink.

This week, Spacecoin reported the successful transmission of secured data via its initial demonstration satellite. This validates the satellite’s capability to perform encrypted transactions while in orbit.

Proof-of-Concept for Space-Based Cryptography

The blockchain transaction, originating in Chile and reaching Portugal, functioned as a proof-of-concept. It demonstrated the feasibility of transferring cryptographic signatures and encrypted data through space.

“The core question was: can cryptographic signatures be transmitted to space without corruption?” explained Spacecoin founder Tae Oh in a video shared on X. “Without a positive answer, constructing a decentralized network of communications satellites and realizing permissionless connectivity would be impossible.”

CTC-0 and Future Satellite Plans

CTC-0, a compact satellite constructed by Endurosat, was launched in December 2024 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rideshare mission. It represents the first in a series of planned prototype satellites.

Spacecoin intends to launch three additional satellites, collectively designated CTC-1. These will be incrementally larger than CTC-0, with subsequent spacecraft designed for even greater performance capabilities.

Competition in the Satellite Broadband Market

This development occurs as Starlink continues to strengthen its position as a leader in satellite broadband services. SpaceX, with its integrated launch capabilities, has deployed over 8,000 satellites and secured millions of users worldwide.

Several competitors, including Amazon’s Kuiper project, are also actively preparing to challenge Starlink’s dominance.

A Decentralized Approach: Starmesh

However, Spacecoin differentiates itself through a focus on decentralization and “tokenized access,” unlike the managed broadband networks of Starlink and others.

The company plans to launch “Starmesh,” an encrypted internet traffic network. This network is designed to “preserve internet freedom while enabling secure, untraceable browsing and access to decentralized web applications.”

Origins and Underlying Technology

Established in 2022, Spacecoin originated as a spin-off from Gluwa, a company founded by Oh that delivers financial services to developing economies.

Spacecoin’s internet infrastructure will operate on the Creditcoin blockchain. This will facilitate payment for internet services and other financial transactions by users.

Resilience and Independence

“In contrast to traditional terrestrial networks, which are susceptible to disruptions, censorship, and high costs, a decentralized satellite-based system can provide internet access that is globally available, resistant to censorship, and free from monopolistic control,” the company stated.
