sora for android saw nearly half a million installs on its first day

Sora's Android Debut: A Strong Start
The Android release of Sora has begun successfully. Initial data suggests approximately 470,000 downloads were recorded on the first day of availability on the Google Play Store, as reported by app intelligence firm Appfigures.
This Android launch represents a significant expansion, exceeding the iOS launch by a factor of more than four, with a 327% increase in installations.
Comparing iOS and Android Launches
It’s important to note that a direct comparison isn’t entirely straightforward. The initial iOS version of Sora was limited to users in the United States and Canada and required an invitation to access.
Conversely, the Android version launched in a wider range of countries, including the U.S., Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. OpenAI also removed the invitation requirement for key markets in late October.
Sora's Rapid Growth and Features
Despite its initial exclusivity, the app quickly gained popularity after its first release. Within its first week, the iOS app surpassed one million installs and rose to prominence on the App Store.
Currently, it maintains a strong position, ranking as the No. 4 free app on the U.S. App Store’s iPhone charts.
Sora allows users to generate videos through text prompts. A unique feature, called Cameos, enables the inclusion of users and their acquaintances within these AI-generated videos.
The app presents videos in a vertically scrolling feed, similar to TikTok, allowing users to explore content created by others utilizing the technology.
Revised Download Estimates
Appfigures has updated its initial estimates regarding the first-day iOS downloads of Sora. Previous models indicated around 56,000 downloads.
However, with more data available, the revised estimate is closer to 110,000 downloads, with approximately 69,300 originating from the U.S.
Android Dominance and Continued Interest
In comparison, the Sora Android app recorded approximately 296,000 installs from the U.S., contributing to the overall total of 470,000. This demonstrates sustained user interest in the AI video creation tool, even following the initial excitement surrounding the iOS launch.
Competition in the AI Video Space
Sora is also positioned within a competitive landscape, facing rivals such as Meta AI, which recently released its mobile application to users in Europe, following its initial launch in the U.S.
The availability of these tools is rapidly expanding, offering users more options for AI-powered video creation.
