Sony ZV-E10: Interchangeable Lens Vlogging Camera

Sony Introduces the ZV-E10: A Vlogging-Focused Mirrorless Camera
Sony has recently unveiled its inaugural mirrorless camera specifically designed for vlogging, the ZV-E10. This new model incorporates several features initially found in the ZV-1 compact vlogging camera.
The ZV-E10 is fundamentally built upon the foundations of the A5000 and A6000-series APS-C mirrorless cameras, inheriting both their strengths and limitations.
Key Advantages Over the ZV-1
Compared to the ZV-1, the ZV-E10 boasts two significant improvements: a larger 24-megapixel APS-C sensor and a compatible interchangeable lens mount. This lens mount grants vloggers access to Sony’s extensive collection of over 60 E-mount lenses, greatly enhancing the camera’s versatility beyond the fixed-lens configuration of the ZV-1.
Furthermore, the larger sensor promises enhanced light sensitivity and the ability to achieve a shallower depth of field.
Sensor and Video Capabilities
The ZV-E10 utilizes the 24-megapixel APS-C sensor present in the A6100 and other contemporary Sony cameras. While this sensor delivers sharp, downsampled 4K video at up to 30 frames per second, or 120 fps at 1080p, it may exhibit considerable rolling shutter, potentially impacting its suitability for fast-motion vlogging.
Fortunately, the camera includes both optical and active electronic image stabilization, mirroring the ZV-1’s capabilities. This should effectively minimize camera shake during handheld shooting, although exceptional stabilization shouldn’t be expected during dynamic “walk-and-talk” vlogging, particularly if rolling shutter proves problematic.
Design and Features
In terms of size, the ZV-E10 measures 343 grams, making it smaller than any camera in the A6000 series. Its dimensions are only slightly larger than those of the ZV-1.
It does not feature an electronic viewfinder, but it is Sony’s first APS-C mirrorless camera equipped with a fully-articulating flip-out screen – a crucial feature for modern vlogging cameras.
Autofocus and Creative Tools
The ZV-E10 incorporates Sony’s advanced phase-detect autofocus system, functioning for both video and still photography. This system provides rapid subject tracking, alongside reliable eye, face, and head detection autofocus.
It also features an S&Q mode, enabling in-camera recording of time-lapse and slow-motion footage without requiring post-production editing.
Vlogging-Specific Functionality
Several vlogging features have been directly adopted from the ZV-1. The “product showcase” setting instantly shifts focus from the user’s face to an object held in front of the camera, ideal for product reviews.
Additionally, a bokeh switch instantly sets the lowest available f-stop for the current lighting conditions, maximizing background blur and emphasizing the subject.
Audio and Connectivity
The ZV-E10 includes a built-in, high-quality three-way microphone (left, right, and center channels) designed to prioritize vocal clarity. This allows for vlogging without an external microphone, though a dedicated shotgun or lapel mic will provide superior quality and isolation.
A hotshoe-mounted muff is included to reduce wind noise, and a wind noise reduction setting is also available. A microphone input is provided, but a headphone output is not.
For live streaming, the ZV-E10 can be directly connected to a smartphone to broadcast to platforms like YouTube, similar to Panasonic’s GH5-II. It can also function as a webcam, streaming both video and audio, leveraging its high-quality microphone.
Availability and Pricing
The ZV-E10 will be available in black or white starting in late August. The camera body will retail for $700, while a bundle including Sony’s 16-50mm F/3.5-5.6 power zoom lens will be priced at $800.
