Sony Acquires Bluepoint Games - Remake & Remaster Experts

Sony Completes Acquisition of Bluepoint Games
Sony has finalized the acquisition of Bluepoint Games, a studio located in Austin, Texas, celebrated for its exceptional remakes of titles like Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus. The specifics of the financial agreement were not publicly revealed.
Speculation regarding Sony’s intent to purchase Bluepoint Games began circulating online concurrently with the company’s acquisition of Housemarque, the developer of Returnal, in late June.
Future Development Plans
Sony has not indicated whether Bluepoint Games will maintain its focus on remastering existing games. Alternatively, the studio may now dedicate its resources to developing entirely new intellectual properties (IP) as a member of the PlayStation Studios organization.
Marco Thrush, president of Bluepoint Games, stated, “PlayStation possesses a truly legendary library of games, and our team has found immense satisfaction in introducing these classic titles to a new audience.”
He continued, “Joining PlayStation Studios will enable us to elevate the standard of quality even further and deliver even more significant experiences to the PlayStation player base.”
Expanding PlayStation Studios
This acquisition marks the third studio Sony has brought under its umbrella in the last year. Considering the 2019 purchase of Insomniac Games, the creators of Spider-Man, the total number of studio acquisitions rises to four over a span exceeding two years.
This represents a notable acceleration in Sony’s strategy of acquiring external developers to strengthen its first-party game development capabilities.
Competitive Landscape
Recent industry shifts, such as Microsoft’s $7.5 billion acquisition of ZeniMax Media – the parent company of Bethesda – have altered the competitive landscape. Consequently, highly anticipated games like Starfield will no longer be released on PlayStation platforms.
To maintain its position, Sony requires the expertise and talent found within studios like Bluepoint Games.
