SoftBank Acquires ABB Robotics Unit - Expanding Robotics Portfolio

SoftBank Acquires ABB Robotics for $5.375 Billion
SoftBank Group, a major Japanese investment firm, is expanding its presence in the robotics sector. The company views physical AI as a key area for future growth and innovation.
Deal Details and Timeline
On Wednesday, SoftBank announced the acquisition of ABB Group’s robotics division, based in Zurich, Switzerland, for a sum of $5.375 billion. Regulatory approvals are required before the transaction can be finalized.
SoftBank anticipates the deal will be completed sometime between mid and late 2026, as stated in their official press release. Sami Atiya, currently leading the ABB robotics unit, will be departing the company upon the acquisition’s conclusion.
ABB Robotics: A Snapshot
ABB’s robotics business currently employs approximately 7,000 individuals. They specialize in the development and sale of robots and related equipment.
These robots are designed for a diverse range of applications, including tasks such as picking, cleaning, and painting processes. In 2024, the division generated $2.3 billion in revenue.
This revenue figure represents 7% of ABB’s total revenue. ABB initially announced its intention to spin off its robotics group back in April.
SoftBank’s Strategy for Growth
SoftBank aims to revitalize sales within the ABB robotics business. The unit’s 2024 revenue experienced a slight decline to $2.3 billion, compared to $2.5 billion in the preceding year.
Expanding Robotics Portfolio
Over recent years, SoftBank has been actively increasing its investments in the robotics industry. This includes investments in established companies like AutoStore.
Furthermore, the firm has provided funding to emerging startups such as Skild AI and Agile Robots. SoftBank also established its own robotics platform, SoftBank Robotics Group, back in 2014.
Vision for the Future of AI and Robotics
“SoftBank’s next frontier is physical AI,” declared Masayoshi Son, Chairman and CEO of SoftBank, in the company’s press release. He envisions a synergy between world-class technology and talent.
The goal is to integrate Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) with robotics, fostering a significant advancement that will benefit humanity.
Strategic Focus Areas
Robotics is one of four core areas of focus for SoftBank. The other key areas include AI chips, AI data centers, and the energy sector.
The Evolving Information Revolution
“The center of the ‘Information Revolution’ has evolved from personal computers, the internet, and broadband to smartphones, and has now entered a new phase led by artificial intelligence,” SoftBank stated in its press release.
The company has committed to a mission of achieving artificial super intelligence (ASI) to drive progress for humankind.
