Snowflake Expands Data Capabilities with Crunchy Data Acquisition

The trend of data company acquisitions persisted on Monday, as Snowflake announced its plan to purchase Crunchy Data.

Snowflake, a leading cloud data platform, revealed its intention to acquire Crunchy Data, a prominent partner within the Postgres database ecosystem, late in the day. Sources indicate the transaction is valued at approximately $250 million.

Specific financial details of the agreement were not publicly released. Snowflake has not yet commented on the reported valuation.

Strategic Acquisitions in the Data Landscape

This acquisition follows a series of moves by major technology companies to acquire data startups. These purchases aim to strengthen the foundational database capabilities that underpin the development of AI agents.

Recent examples include Salesforce’s acquisition of Informatica to enhance its data management tools for AI applications. Similarly, Alation acquired Numbers Station to provide its clientele with AI agents capable of operating on structured data. ServiceNow also entered the fray, acquiring Data.World with a focus on AI integration.

Crunchy Data and the Power of Postgres

Crunchy Data provides organizations with the necessary tools to develop applications utilizing Postgres. This is an open-source, object-relational database management system favored by developers and compatible with the SQL database language.

The company, established 13 years ago, serves a diverse client base. This includes UPS, SAS, Moneytree, and various public sector entities, such as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Snowflake's Enhanced Database Offerings

The acquisition will enable Snowflake to introduce Snowflake Postgres. This will be an enterprise-level PostgreSQL database designed for its customers and partners, including Blue Yonder and LandingAI.

This move significantly strengthens Snowflake’s database portfolio in the context of the growing demand for AI agents.

The new technology is scheduled for release in a private preview shortly.

“Our vision is to deliver the world’s most trusted and comprehensive data and AI platform to our customers,” stated Vivek Raghunathan, SVP of engineering at Snowflake, in a press release. “The proposed acquisition of Crunchy Data underscores why Snowflake is becoming the primary destination for enterprise data and AI requirements. We are addressing a substantial $350 billion market opportunity and fulfilling a critical need for our customers to integrate Postgres into the Snowflake AI Data Cloud.”

Expanding Data Connectivity

Snowflake launched new connectors for PostgreSQL and MySQL earlier this year, allowing Snowflake customers to integrate with these databases. This acquisition builds upon that existing functionality.

Last year, Snowflake also acquired Datavolo, a data management company, further demonstrating its commitment to expanding its data capabilities.
