Snapchat has announced the release of a novel Lens that empowers users to generate and modify images through the utilization of a text-to-image artificial intelligence generator. This information was shared with TechCrunch on an exclusive basis.
The newly launched “Imagine Lens” is accessible to individuals holding Snapchat+ Platinum and Lens+ subscriptions.
Creating Images with Text Prompts
The Imagine Lens functionality enables users to construct, refine, and reimagine Snaps simply by inputting their own descriptive prompts. Generated images can then be readily shared with contacts, published to a user’s Story, or disseminated beyond the Snapchat platform.
Although Snapchat already offers a variety of generative AI Lenses, the company emphasizes that Imagine Lens represents its inaugural image-generation Lens that accepts open-ended prompts.
Prompt Examples and Features
Users are able to produce images using personalized prompts, such as “generate an image of a disgruntled feline” or “transform my appearance into that of an extraterrestrial being.”
The Lens also incorporates pre-defined prompts for convenience, including options like “Convert me into a comic strip consisting of four to five panels, depicting an unforeseen yet heroic event,” “Render me as a humorous caricature,” and “Depict this individual skydiving.”
Snapchat clarifies that users retain the ability to modify their prompts at any time by tapping the caption bar.
Underlying AI Technology
Earlier in the year, Snap revealed an AI text-to-image research model specifically designed for mobile devices. This model was anticipated to underpin several future Snapchat features.
While Snap did not explicitly confirm whether this model powers the new Lens, it did state that its Lenses are developed using a combination of internally created models and leading-edge AI models from the industry.
Subscription Details and Access
Snapchat+ Platinum and Lens+ subscribers can locate the new Lens at the forefront of the Lens Carousel or within the Exclusive section. Upon selecting the Lens, users can tap the caption to input or edit their desired prompt.
A Platinum subscription is priced at $15.99 monthly, while a Lens+ subscription costs $8.99 per month.
