Snap Map Hits 400 Million Monthly Active Users

Snap Map Reaches 400 Million Monthly Active Users
Snapchat revealed on Wednesday that its Snap Map feature has surpassed 400 million monthly active users. This represents a significant achievement for a key component of the application.
Initial Launch and Evolution
First introduced in 2017, Snap Map initially functioned as a platform for users to view the locations of their friends and explore publicly shared snaps globally. The feature has undergone substantial development since its inception.
It now provides users with tools to identify popular local destinations and discover activities in their vicinity.
Competitive Advantage
The success of Snap Map is vital to Snapchat’s overall strategy. It provides a distinct advantage over competitors such as Instagram and TikTok.
Neither of these platforms currently offer comparable real-time social discovery capabilities.
Instagram's Response
Instagram, owned by Meta, recognizes this competitive gap. Development of a similar feature, dubbed “Friend Map,” has been observed, aiming to replicate the real-time location sharing functionality.
Snap's Statement
“Snap Map is one of the most utilized mobile maps worldwide, and we are delighted by the continued expansion of our user base,” stated Ceci Mourkogiannis, VP of Product at Snap, in a communication to TechCrunch.
“The Snap Map facilitates connections between hundreds of millions of individuals, their preferred locations, and ongoing events, fostering a greater sense of global interconnectedness.”
Recent Updates and Features
This announcement follows a series of updates to Snap Map, enhancing its functionality over time.
Last year saw the introduction of the “Footsteps” feature, allowing users to visualize their exploration of the world and monitor their travel history.
Promoted Places
Furthermore, Snapchat launched “Promoted Places” on Snap Map. This allows users to find new establishments and points of interest.
For businesses, Promoted Places offers an advertising avenue to display all their locations directly on the Snap Map.
