sirenum, a platform for managing shift and gig workers, raises a $2.7m series a

Sirenum, a solution designed for the remote oversight of personnel working shifts in sectors like rail transport, air travel, building and construction, and freelance work, has secured $2.7 million in Series A investment. This funding comes from new backers, notably including Sir Terry Leahy, the former Chief Executive of Tesco, in addition to the William Currie Group.

According to Sirenum, its platform, offered on a subscription basis, streamlines the complexities of managing a shift-based workforce. This includes creating and maintaining work schedules, overseeing and communicating with employees, and automating essential financial operations, such as wage disbursement. Current customers of Sirenum encompass large staffing firms like Randstad, Impellam, Manpower, and GI Group, alongside specialized recruitment companies like TES.

A core challenge in managing shift workers lies in ensuring they are correctly positioned, on time, and accurately compensated. Sirenum addresses this by empowering employees to control their work hours through a mobile application, allowing them to accept or decline available shifts and review their pay information whenever needed. The platform integrates shift administration, payroll processing, adherence to regulations, and schedule creation. Furthermore, the application monitors worker fatigue levels in accordance with U.K. Health and Safety standards, enabling employers to prioritize employee well-being and maintain regulatory compliance.

The origins of Sirenum can be traced back to the experience of its founder, Benjamin Rubin, who previously operated a staffing agency in London. While on his honeymoon, he received a distressing call informing him that one of his employees had been struck by a train.

Fortunately, the employee recovered, but this incident prompted Rubin to seek a tool that would allow him to manage his workforce safely across multiple sites. He subsequently created the Sirenum product as a solution for his agency and, in 2012, secured the contract to provide staffing for the Olympic Stadium. Sirenum transitioned into an independent product in 2014 and presently reports having close to 400,000 workers utilizing the platform.

Key competitors in the market include TempBuddy (a Bullhorn company), Shiftboard, and WorkN. Shiftboard has, to date, raised $16.9 million in funding.
