Signal Backup Plans: Free & Paid Options

Signal Introduces New Backup Options for Enhanced User Security
The privacy-centric messaging application, Signal, revealed on Monday the implementation of a new functionality. This feature permits users to create backups of their text-based conversations without charge, encompassing the most recent 45 days of associated media files.
Alongside this, Signal is also launching its inaugural subscription-based service. This paid option provides comprehensive media backups, offering up to 100GB of storage capacity.
Addressing Previous Limitations
Previously, Signal did not provide any means for users to retain backups of their communications within the application itself. This presented a potential issue, particularly in scenarios involving device loss or damage.
While conversation transfers between devices were possible, a cloud-based backup solution was absent. The newly introduced feature effectively resolves this concern, bolstering Signal’s position as a leading platform for secure messaging.
Details of the Free and Paid Tiers
Signal’s complimentary tier allocates 100MB of storage for text messages and media from the preceding 45 days. According to the company’s official blog post, messages are compressed prior to storage.
This 100MB allowance is deemed sufficient for even users with substantial messaging activity.
For those desiring to archive media extending beyond the 45-day window, a paid subscription is available at a cost of $1.99 per month. This plan provides 100GB of storage.
A New Revenue Model
This marks Signal’s first venture into offering paid features. The company states that these charges are intended to offset the expenses associated with providing privacy-focused storage solutions.
Enabling and Securing Backups
The secure backup feature can be activated through the application’s Settings menu, initiating a daily backup process of your content.
Signal employs zero-knowledge encryption technology to safeguard its backups. This ensures that backups are not connected to individual users or payment details.
A 64-character recovery key, generated directly on the user’s device, is provided to unlock these backups.
Comparison with Competitors
In comparison, WhatsApp provides end-to-end encrypted backups as an optional feature that requires explicit user activation.
Initial Availability and Future Plans
Currently, this functionality is being rolled out exclusively to beta users of the Android application. However, Signal confirms that cross-platform compatibility is forthcoming.
Looking ahead, the company intends to allow users to save backup archives to locations of their choosing. Furthermore, plans are in place to facilitate the transfer of message history across different platforms.
