Shopify AI Traffic & Orders Surge: 7x & 11x Growth

Shopify's Strong Bet on AI-Powered Shopping

Shopify, a leading e-commerce software provider, has expressed significant optimism regarding AI-powered shopping agents. The company views AI as a transformative technology, labeling it an “incredible tool” for empowering entrepreneurs and the “biggest shift in technology since the internet” during its Q3 earnings discussion.

Increased Traffic and Purchases via AI

Shopify, which established a partnership with OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, in September, has observed a substantial increase in traffic originating from AI tools to its online stores. This traffic has risen by a factor of 7 since January.

Furthermore, purchases directly attributed to AI-powered search functionalities have experienced an even more dramatic surge, increasing by a multiple of 11 over the same period.

Shopify's Competitive Advantage

According to Harley Finkelstein, President of Shopify, the company’s strength in the evolving AI landscape stems from its unique access to data. This includes information from millions of merchants and billions of completed transactions.

A key element of their strategy is a “founder mode” approach, prioritizing rapid product development and deployment.

Internal AI Tools for Enhanced Decision-Making

Shopify is also leveraging AI internally through tools like Scout. This AI-driven system assists Shopify employees in analyzing vast amounts of merchant feedback – totaling hundreds of millions of data points – to facilitate more informed product decisions.

“Scout represents just one instance of the numerous tools we are creating to transform our internal signals, such as support requests, usage statistics, customer reviews, social media interactions, and Sidekick prompts, into swift and well-considered choices,” Finkelstein stated.

He emphasized that AI is not merely an added feature at Shopify; it is fundamental to the core engine driving all of the company’s development efforts.

Expanding AI Partnerships

Beyond ChatGPT, Shopify is actively collaborating with Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot to develop further in-chat shopping experiences.

Recent Shopify research indicates a strong consumer interest in AI-assisted shopping, with 64% of shoppers expressing a likelihood of utilizing AI to some degree during their purchasing journeys.

Laying the Foundation for Agentic Commerce

“We have been diligently constructing and investing in the necessary infrastructure to seamlessly integrate shopping into every AI-driven conversation,” Finkelstein explained.

He believes that their existing collaborations with leading AI companies demonstrate a commitment to ensuring that Shopify merchants are well-prepared for the future of commerce.

While acknowledging the early stage of development, Shopify is focused on establishing the groundwork for “agentic commerce.”

Preparing for Diverse AI Commerce Models

Shopify recognizes that agentic commerce may evolve in various ways and is preparing for multiple potential outcomes.

Finkelstein drew a parallel to the emergence of social commerce, noting the shift from viewing e-commerce as separate from physical retail to embracing the concept of “commerce everywhere.”

Q3 Financial Performance

Shopify’s Q3 financial results revealed a 32% increase in revenue, reaching $2.84 billion, exceeding expectations.

The company also reported a profit of $264 million, or 20 cents per share.

However, the company’s stock experienced a decline following the announcement that its operating income of $434 million fell slightly short of the anticipated $437 million.
