Magic Leap Raises $500M at $2B Valuation - Again

Magic Leap Secures Further Investment
Magic Leap has experienced a complex history, yet continues to attract financial backing from investors.
The augmented reality company recently announced a new funding round of $500 million, resulting in a $2 billion valuation from its current investor base.
Funding Details and Past Performance
This funding round mirrors a previous raise in October 2014, where Magic Leap secured $542 million at a $2 billion valuation. Significant developments have occurred within the company since that time.
Notably, Magic Leap chose not to publicly reveal the identities of the investors involved in this latest funding initiative.
According to Crunchbase, the company has now amassed a total of $3.5 billion in funding. This suggests that a substantial portion of its early investors have not yet seen a significant return on their investment.
Valuation and Leadership Changes
The current valuation represents a decrease from the company’s peak valuation of $6.7 billion in 2019.
However, considering the near-closure the company faced last year, the current valuation could be considered favorable. Magic Leap underwent significant restructuring, including workforce reductions and fundraising at reduced terms.
Furthermore, the company appointed former Microsoft VP, Peggy Johnson, as its new CEO, replacing founder Rony Abovitz.
Strategic Shift to Enterprise Focus
Magic Leap is actively repositioning itself by concentrating its efforts on the enterprise market.
This follows previous attempts to compete for military contracts and secure enterprise clients, alongside efforts to maintain a presence in the consumer market through costly game development for its headset.
Next-Generation Hardware
Accompanying the funding announcement, CNBC released a new rendering of Magic Leap’s upcoming AR glasses.
The new device appears to have a significantly reduced form factor.
Magic Leap has provided limited details regarding the new device’s capabilities, stating in a press release that the Magic Leap 2 will be released sometime next year.
