Set Up Live Skype Audio Broadcast with Chatroom on Mac

Creating a Live Skype Audio Broadcast to Mixlr

With the Technophilia Podcast now reaching over 500 listeners each week, we've been exploring methods for real-time interaction during live recordings.

Achieving this presents a challenge. Initial tests with a simple chatroom proved insufficient, as the lack of a concurrent audio stream diminished listener engagement.

Setting Up the Broadcast

This article details a straightforward process for transmitting a Skype audio feed, including both your voice and that of any co-hosts, to a Mixlr station.

The setup leverages software to route audio effectively.

Software Requirements (Mac Users)

For Mac users, Soundflower is the key component. It acts as a virtual audio device, allowing you to redirect audio streams.

Windows users should note that while this guide focuses on macOS, a comparable application named Jack (currently unavailable) can be utilized.

Substituting Soundflower with Jack should yield an identical workflow.

  • Soundflower: A virtual audio device for macOS.
  • Mixlr: A platform for live audio broadcasting.
  • Skype: For conducting the podcast interview.

Configuration Steps

The core principle involves routing Skype's audio output through Soundflower before sending it to Mixlr.

This ensures that the Mixlr broadcast captures the conversation in real-time.

Further details on the specific configuration within each application will be provided in a subsequent article.

This method allows for a more engaging and interactive podcasting experience.

Mixlr

Mixlr functions as an audio broadcasting platform, incorporating integrated chat functionality. During testing, a delay of approximately ten seconds was observed, though the overall audio quality was exceptional.

Prior to further exploration, it is recommended to register for a complimentary account and download the Mixlr desktop broadcasting application, available at no cost.

Key Features

The platform allows users to transmit audio content and interact with listeners in real-time through dedicated chatrooms.

Mixlr distinguishes itself through its simplicity and focus on live audio experiences.

The observed latency, while present, does not significantly detract from the platform’s usability or the quality of the broadcast.

Consider establishing an account and downloading the broadcasting software to fully assess its capabilities.

Broadcasting audio isn't inherently complex; connecting to the audio output of applications like iTunes is straightforward. However, a common issue arises when attempting to include your own voice alongside system sounds. Typically, you're limited to recording either your voice or system audio, but not simultaneously.

The solution to this challenge lies in utilizing SoundFlower, a remarkable and freely available utility. It functions by establishing a virtual audio device and employing digital processing techniques.

Installation and Setup

SoundFlower is available as a free download from the Google Code Project. Obtain the most recent DMG installer file. Installation requires administrative privileges, as it involves a low-level system sound driver.

The download package includes SoundFlowerBed, a graphical user interface designed to simplify interface management. Upon initial launch, you might need to right-click the application and choose Open, depending on your macOS security preferences.

LineIn: A Software Mixer

A further essential component of this setup is the freely available application known as LineIn. This software functions as a pass-through mixer, enabling the routing of any audio input to any desired output.

Following the download process, it is recommended to create a duplicate of the application file and rename it LineInB. Two instances of the application will be utilized subsequently.

Configuring Audio Routing

The audio routing configuration represents the most complex stage of this procedure. However, diligent adherence to the following steps should ensure successful implementation.

  • Select the SoundFlowerBed icon located in the taskbar. Configure SoundFlower (64ch) to direct audio to Built-in Output. This action effectively channels system audio through SoundFlower.

  • Within System Preferences, designate SoundFlower (2ch) as the sound output device. Maintain your existing audio input settings, such as a USB microphone.

  • Initiate the LineIn application. Specify your standard USB or system microphone as the input source. Set the output destination to Soundflower (2ch). Activate the PassThrough function.

  • Open LineInB. Define the input as Soundflower (64ch) and the output as Soundflower (2ch). Enable PassThrough functionality.

  • Within Skype’s settings, select Soundflower (2ch) as the output device. Verify that your microphone is correctly identified as the input device.

The configuration is now complete. Your Soundflower (2ch) device functions as a composite source, integrating your microphone, system audio, and Skype audio streams. A potential drawback is the unavoidable self-monitoring of your voice during recording.

Unfortunately, a method to eliminate this self-monitoring has not yet been discovered. Should you successfully modify this process to resolve this issue, please share your solution in the comments section.

Audio Capture Methods

In a previous demonstration, the process of recording Skype conversations was illustrated using Skype Call Recorder. While this method remains potentially viable, difficulties were encountered with recording audio originating from SoundFlower. Consequently, an alternative approach will be presented.

This involves configuring Audacity – a widely-used, complimentary audio application – to utilize SoundFlower as its input source for recording.

Alternative Recording Strategy

A supplementary strategy exists if your participants are utilizing Skype Call Recorder, which they ideally should for redundancy. In such instances, prioritize the audio stream received from their recording.

This ensures a backup recording is available, enhancing the reliability of the audio capture process.

Going Live on Mixlr

Begin by opening Mixlr and, once you've logged in, choose Setup Broadcast to initiate the streaming process.

Within the audio source selection dropdown, locate and choose the "Soundflower (2ch)" device. Observe the input levels as you do so.

Speak into your microphone; the levels should respond to your voice. Similarly, playing audio through iTunes should also register movement on the level indicators.

If the levels are reacting as expected, your configuration is functioning correctly. Audio monitoring is already handled through SoundFlower, so no further adjustments are needed at this stage.

Next, input a title for your broadcast and select an appropriate category. If this is a preliminary run, clearly indicate that it is a test broadcast.

Finally, click broadcast to start your stream and await your audience.

Live Broadcast Verification

To confirm proper functionality, you should be able to access your live broadcast at mixlr.com/your-username/stage (you can find my broadcast here). The platform features a remarkably straightforward interface.

Utilize the controls located on the left side of the screen to switch between views of your audience, the chatroom, the audio equalizer display, and broadcast details.

Simple Setup Completion

With these steps completed, your live broadcast is now active. The primary challenge then becomes attracting listeners to participate.

Unfortunately, assistance with audience building falls outside the scope of this guide.

Are you currently utilizing an alternative service for live audio broadcasting with integrated chat functionality? Please share your recommendations in the comments section; I am eager to explore other options.

Mixlr provides a convenient solution for sharing audio content with a live audience.

The platform’s intuitive design makes it easy to manage your broadcast and interact with listeners.
