iTunes Match Setup: A Complete Guide

iTunes Match: A Comprehensive User Review

Following the availability of iTunes Match in the UK, I subscribed to the service and have been evaluating its performance for approximately one week. This article provides a detailed explanation of iTunes Match, clarifying its capabilities and limitations.

Understanding iTunes Match

The core function of iTunes Match is to provide access to your entire music library across all your devices. It achieves this by matching your existing songs with tracks available in the iTunes Store.

It’s important to understand what iTunes Match does not do. It doesn’t simply upload your entire library as a personal cloud storage solution, though it does involve cloud interaction.

Upgrading to 256kbps Quality

A key feature of iTunes Match is the option to upgrade your matched songs to higher quality 256kbps AAC files. This process enhances the listening experience, particularly on devices with good audio capabilities.

The upgrade process is relatively straightforward. It involves a simple setting adjustment within your iTunes preferences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many users have questions regarding the functionality of this service. This section aims to address common inquiries about iTunes Match and its operation.

  • Does it replace my music files? No, iTunes Match works alongside your existing library.
  • What if a song isn't matched? Unmatched songs are uploaded directly to iCloud.
  • Is an Apple Music subscription required? No, iTunes Match is a separate subscription service.

Ultimately, iTunes Match offers a convenient way to synchronize and enhance your music collection across multiple Apple devices. It’s a valuable service for those heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem.

Understanding the Functionality of iTunes Match

iTunes Match provides cloud-based storage for a music library containing up to 25,000 songs. The service attempts to identify and replace your existing music files with DRM-free, 256kbps high-quality versions hosted on Apple's servers, when a match is found.

In instances where a direct match isn't available, your original song files are uploaded to the cloud without alteration. This ensures all your music is accessible.

The service allows users to replace locally stored, lower-quality audio files with the superior 256kbps versions available through iTunes Match. This applies to music obtained from various sources, including those acquired through unofficial means.

Key Considerations Regarding File Size

It’s important to note that a 256kbps file will require approximately twice the storage space compared to a file encoded at 128kbps. This is a factor to consider when evaluating storage needs.

Accessibility and Device Compatibility

Upon being stored in the cloud, your complete music collection becomes accessible for both downloading and streaming.

Access is granted on a maximum of five devices that are registered to your individual iTunes account. This provides flexibility and convenience for music enjoyment across multiple platforms.

iTunes Match offers a convenient way to consolidate and enhance your digital music library.

Limitations

The matching process has a restriction regarding bitrate; songs encoded at less than 96kbps are ineligible for identification.

Only musical content, including music videos, is supported for matching purposes. Audiobooks are not directly compatible.

Audiobook Workaround

A workaround exists for audiobooks. If classified as media type: music and encoded at 96kbps or higher, they can be uploaded and stored alongside standard music tracks.

Existing ID3 tags will remain unchanged. The system will not automatically correct or add missing information like track numbers.

While the audio file will be replaced with a higher-quality version, the associated metadata – including potentially incomplete or inaccurate tags, artwork, and lyrics – will be preserved.

Conversely, this ensures that any custom ID3 tags you have created will not be overwritten during the matching process.

Device and Song Limits

A maximum of 25,000 songs can be matched and stored.

This limit applies across a maximum of five connected devices.

Initial Setup and Track Scanning

Following your subscription, distinct icons will become visible alongside each song within your music library.

These icons indicate that iTunes is actively analyzing your tracks to determine if corresponding matches exist within its service.

The matching process identifies songs already available in the iTunes catalog.

Matching and Upload Times

In a test library containing 7,400 songs, approximately 2,800 were successfully matched.

The complete upload of the remaining, unmatched tracks required around four days to finalize.

However, access to already-uploaded and matched content is available immediately, allowing for uninterrupted enjoyment while the process continues.

Eligible tracks can also be upgraded during this ongoing upload phase.

Upgrading Song Quality to 256kbps

Achieving higher quality audio for your iTunes library isn't always straightforward. The core process involves removing existing songs from iTunes and then redownloading them from the cloud. Identifying which tracks are eligible for an upgrade is the initial challenge.

Creating a Smart Playlist for Upgradeable Songs

To simplify this process, a new smart playlist can be created using specific criteria. This playlist will automatically populate with songs that can be upgraded. Configure the playlist with the following settings:

  • Media type - Music
  • Quality - Less than 256kbps
  • AND ANY OF THE FOLLOWING (use option-click on the "+" symbol to add an "ANY" rule)
  • - iCloud Status is Purchased
  • - iCloud Status is Matched

Songs appearing on this playlist are currently matched in the cloud, indicating that a higher quality version is available for replacement.

Initiating the Upgrade Process

To trigger the upgrade, the identified tracks must be removed from your iTunes library. This can be accomplished by right-clicking on each track and selecting "Delete," or by using the Option-Delete key combination.

When prompted about deleting from iCloud, ensure you select "Don't delete." However, proceed with moving the tracks to the trash or deleting them from your local computer.

Downloading the Upgraded Versions

Following deletion, the tracks will remain visible in the smart playlist, but will now display an iCloud download icon. Select these tracks again, right-click, and choose the "Download" option.

Upon completion of the download, these songs will be removed from the smart playlist. This is because the 256kbps versions now meet the playlist's criteria, and are no longer considered lower quality.

Completing the Upgrade

Repeat this process for each remaining song on the playlist to upgrade your entire library. Congratulations, you have successfully upgraded your song quality.

It’s important to note that this procedure isn’t necessary for your iOS devices. They will automatically utilize the higher quality, matched versions when streaming or downloading content. This playlist is specifically designed to facilitate the replacement of lower quality songs on your computer.

Configuring iTunes Match on iOS Devices

Navigate to the Settings app, then select Music. Within this menu, activate iTunes Match from the options presented. A notification will appear, informing you that your locally stored music may be substituted with versions from iTunes Match. Proceed with the activation.

Allow approximately ten minutes for the synchronization process to complete with the cloud servers. Upon launching the iPod or Music application, your entire iCloud library should become accessible. Any tracks currently uploading will be visually indicated as greyed out.

Songs can be streamed directly by simply selecting the play button, though a slight delay of around five seconds may occasionally be experienced. Alternatively, tracks can be downloaded to your device by tapping the iCloud symbol.

To download an entire playlist, or content categorized by genre or artist, scroll to the bottom of the list. A button enabling the download of all items will be displayed there.

A Comprehensive Music Library Upgrade

Recently, I completed an upgrade of approximately 2,800 songs within my personal music collection to high-quality, 256kbps files. These versions are legally obtained and free of Digital Rights Management (DRM), ensuring permanent ownership.

This upgrade allows for seamless streaming of my entire music library to all my iOS devices. Family sharing via a shared iTunes Store account extends this capability to other members of my household.

Automatic Library Synchronization

Any new music added to the library will be automatically matched against the iTunes Store catalog, if a suitable version exists. If a match isn't found, the song will be uploaded directly to the cloud.

Maintaining synchronization across all devices is a key benefit. The entire library remains consistently updated, regardless of the device used for access.

This represents a robust and legally compliant solution for personal music streaming. The peace of mind that comes with legal access is particularly satisfying.
