Sequoia Shutters DC Office Layoffs - Policy Team Eliminated

Sequoia to Close Washington D.C. Office and Disband Policy Team
Sequoia has confirmed it will be closing its Washington, D.C. office and terminating the employment of its policy team by the end of March, as reported by TechCrunch.
This decision arrives at a time when many other leading venture capital firms in Silicon Valley are actively expanding their influence on Capitol Hill and with the current administration.
Contrasting Strategies
For instance, Andreessen Horowitz is significantly investing in its policy team, with several partners securing positions within the White House.
Recently, they appointed former Republican congressman Patrick McHenry as an advisor, demonstrating their commitment to policy engagement.
Sequoia’s Initial Goals
Sequoia initially established its Washington office five years ago with the intention of providing regulatory support to its portfolio companies and cultivating stronger connections with policymakers.
According to a statement provided to TechCrunch, the firm believes that the policy team’s work in building relationships and increasing understanding has successfully positioned Sequoia for continued success in both the U.S. and Europe.
Transition and Future Plans
“As a result of the strategic guidance and efforts of the policy team, Sequoia is now well-positioned to carry these relationships forward,” a spokesperson stated.
“Consequently, the dedicated policy function will be discontinued, and the D.C. office will be closed at the end of March. We extend our gratitude to the team for their valuable contributions and impact.”
Impact on Personnel
Sources indicate to Fortune that the changes will affect the policy fellows currently working at the firm, as well as three full-time employees.
Political Affiliations
While Sequoia generally maintains a politically neutral stance, some of its partners have publicly expressed their political opinions.
Shaun Maguire, a partner at the firm, is a vocal supporter of President Trump and is reportedly assisting in the vetting of candidates for DOGE.
