Kodiak Robotics & SK Group Partner to Expand Self-Driving Trucks in Asia

Kodiak Robotics and SK Group Collaborate on Autonomous Truck Technology in Asia
Kodiak Robotics, a U.S.-based developer of self-driving trucks, has formed a strategic alliance with SK, a South Korean conglomerate, to investigate the deployment of its autonomous vehicle systems throughout Asia.
The primary objective of this collaboration is the sale and distribution of Kodiak’s self-driving technology within the Asian market. Kodiak will assess the integration of SK’s diverse range of products, components, and technologies into its autonomous system.
Exploring Synergies and Fleet Management
This includes evaluating the potential of SK’s artificial intelligence microprocessors and sophisticated emergency braking systems. Furthermore, both organizations have committed to jointly developing comprehensive fleet management solutions for Asian customers.
Don Burnette, co-founder and CEO of Kodiak, characterized the agreement as an initial phase in exploring a future commercial venture in Asia.
“This represents the initial steps in a thorough investigation,” Burnette explained. “We are determining the feasibility of introducing Kodiak’s AV technologies to Asian markets, identifying necessary requirements, potential partners, and navigating the relevant regulatory landscape.”
Competition in the Asian Autonomous Vehicle Market
Headquartered in Mountain View, California, with operational facilities in Texas, Kodiak will be competing with established self-driving companies such as Plus and TuSimple, both of which already have a foothold in the region.
Plus has recently pursued a merger with special purpose acquisition companies, a common strategy for startups seeking to become publicly traded. TuSimple, conversely, opted for a traditional initial public offering (IPO).
Despite being in its early stages, the partnership provides Kodiak with access to a company possessing extensive reach throughout South Korea and other Asian nations.
SK's Extensive Network and Logistics Expertise
The collaboration is specifically with SK Inc., the holding company of SK Group, which encompasses over 120 operating companies, including those involved in the logistics sector.
“Our collaboration with Kodiak is expected to expedite the commercial adoption of self-driving trucks in Asia,” stated Jungho Shin, executive vice president of SK Inc. “Kodiak’s leading-edge technology, combined with SK’s unparalleled presence in Korea and across Asia, creates a synergistic partnership. We anticipate working with Kodiak to realize the potential of autonomous trucking globally.”
Technical Validation and Future Expansion
Burnette informed TechCrunch that the partnership materialized following a detailed technical evaluation conducted by SK.
“They acknowledge the significance of AV technology, recognizing its safety and economic advantages, and are eager to participate in its advancement,” he said.
This marks Kodiak’s first international expansion, but it may not be its last.
Burnette indicated the company has been considering opportunities in international markets since its inception in 2018.
Exploring Global Markets
“We have engaged in discussions regarding the Australian market,” Burnette revealed. “Australia presents another promising market with considerable potential for this AV technology, particularly for long-haul highway transportation.”
He also mentioned interest in South American markets, specifically Brazil, as well as Europe.
This partnership with SK Inc. builds upon a recent announcement of a contract with the U.S. Air Force to implement autonomous transportation solutions at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, serving the U.S. Department of Defense.
