Check for Ubuntu Updates from the Command Line

Checking for Package Updates in Ubuntu Server
For those managing Ubuntu Server, or preferring command-line administration of a desktop environment, identifying available package updates is crucial. Ubuntu provides Aptitude, a robust package management tool, offering an interactive interface for installing and upgrading software.
Launching Aptitude
To initiate the Aptitude tool, utilize the following command within your terminal. While viewing available updates doesn't require elevated privileges, installation typically does.
sudo aptitude
Executing this command will launch the console-based application.
Navigating the Menu
Use the Enter key to move downwards through the menu options. To return to a previous menu, press Q.
We will now explore the available upgradable packages by navigating through the menu structure.

In this instance, a new version of gnupg is available. Although updating this utility isn't immediately necessary, we will proceed to demonstrate the installation process.
Installing the Update
To choose the new version for installation, press the + key. Subsequently, press G to begin the installation process. This action will present a confirmation screen detailing the changes to be applied.

Observe that the "Packages to be upgraded" section lists the selected packages. Pressing G again will initiate the installation. Finally, use Q to exit the application, completing the update process.
Aptitude provides a user-friendly method for managing software updates on your Ubuntu system.
