Secure Data Storage with IDrive

Last week, an examination of various online storage services for data backup, storage, and sharing was conducted. This week’s focus shifts to services prioritizing enhanced security measures.

IDrive Security Features

IDrive employs AES 256-bit encryption to safeguard data stored within its online service. Data transmission to the storage platform is secured using 128-bit SSL encryption.

Users can initiate service with a complimentary 2GB account. A Pro Personal Account, offering 150GB of storage, is available for $4.95 per month. Business-oriented accounts are also offered at varying price points.

Initial Setup and Encryption

Like other online storage solutions, the process begins with creating a free account on the IDrive website and downloading the necessary desktop software.

Upon launching IDrive for the first time, users are prompted to log in. Following successful login, a window appears, requesting the establishment of an encryption storage password.

It is strongly recommended to create a unique password. Remembering this password is crucial, as it cannot be recovered if lost. IDrive does not retain these passwords on their servers.

Alternatively, users can opt for the default encryption key provided by IDrive, eliminating the need to create and remember a personal password.

Verification and Directory Selection

After setting the encryption password, a verification message is displayed, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding it.

When the IDrive Classic manager is launched, certain directories are pre-selected for backup. This may initially exceed the storage limit of the free account.

Users have full control to modify these selections, choosing only the directories they wish to back up.

Initiating the Backup Process

Once the desired directories are chosen, the total size of the selected files is displayed. Confirming the selections, users can then click Backup Now to begin the process.

A progress screen appears as IDrive prepares the files for backup.

Data Transfer and Bandwidth Control

During the actual secure data transfer, a dedicated screen provides real-time progress updates. Users can adjust the bandwidth allocation and pause the backup if needed.

Backup Completion and Log Review

Upon completion, users are given the option to immediately review the backup log file.

The log is a detailed text document listing every file that was successfully backed up. Its length will vary depending on the volume of data transferred.

The log’s conclusion confirms the backup’s start and stop times, and verifies successful completion.

Virtual Drive and Application Features

IDrive creates a virtual drive on the user’s computer. This drive is accessible through My Computer, allowing users to view available storage space without opening the IDrive Classic application or visiting the website.

The IDrive Classic application serves as the central hub for managing backups, viewing logs, conducting bandwidth tests, and synchronizing folders.

Continuous Backup

A Continuous Backup feature monitors selected directories for changes and automatically updates the backups on IDrive as needed. IDrive is compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems.
