Understanding Malicious Software Types

Various classifications exist for malicious software, often referred to as malware. Terms like adware, spyware, and grayware are used to describe the specific actions each type performs. While these unwanted programs differ in their functionality, the common denominator is that their presence on your computer is undesirable.

Below are straightforward definitions to enhance your understanding of these terms when encountered.

  • Spyware: Software that, with or without your knowledge, installs on your PC and collects data regarding your online activity, potentially including personal information.
  • Adware: Software installed on your computer, either with or without your permission, that generates pop-up advertisements.
  • Grayware: Software installed on your PC, with or without your consent, that falls into a less critical category than viruses, but can still be irritating.
  • Malware: An encompassing term that includes all of the above, as well as viruses, Trojans, worms, and rootkits.

Introducing Our Anti-Malware Series

This week marks the beginning of a series focused on free Anti-Malicious Software Programs. Recognizing that no single anti-spyware tool is foolproof, we will evaluate the leading options. Ultimately, we will compare previously reviewed anti-virus applications with the anti-spyware programs featured in this series to recommend optimal combinations.

Let's begin with Lavasoft's Ad-Aware 2008, available for free home use.

Upon initiating the installation process, a screen will appear prompting you to enter your license key if you have purchased one. Otherwise, simply click the “Use Free” button to proceed.

Before the installation is finalized, Ad-Aware will update its database with the most current definitions.

Following a successful installation, you will find two desktop shortcuts. One of these is Ad-Watch, a real-time adware protection utility. However, this feature is not included in the free version, as indicated by a displayed message. This serves as a promotional tactic to encourage upgrades to the Plus and Pro versions, which some might consider a form of adware itself.

*Note: A free version of Ad-Aware Plus can be obtained through promotional offers that we do not recommend. These offers typically involve signing up for trial services and receiving unwanted email (SPAM) in exchange for a year of Plus or Pro access, after which the benefits expire. Two scan modes are available: Smart Scan, which focuses on the most critical system areas, and Full Scan, which examines the entire system and consequently takes longer. For computers with significant infections, a Full Scan is advisable. The Custom Scan feature requires an upgrade to the Plus or Pro version.

As the scan progresses, you can monitor its status and view any identified objects.

Upon completion of the scan, you can select which objects to remove, create a Restore Point before removing entries, and export a scan summary to a text document.

Ad-Aware Settings and Features

Ad-Aware offers various configurable settings. The TrackSweep tool is particularly useful, allowing you to erase traces of your internet browsing activity across major web browsers.

Additional settings control scanning behavior, AutoScans, the User Interface (including skin customization), and Log Files. Full access to these options may require upgrading to the Plus or Pro version.

Conclusion

Opinions vary considerably regarding the "best" anti-spyware program. No solution provides 100% protection, but most offer a substantial level of security. We will soon provide side-by-side scanning comparisons and a rating system to aid in your decision-making process.

Overall, Ad-Aware remains a viable option for identifying and removing threats. It was once an indispensable component of a robust security strategy. However, numerous other free utilities now offer comparable functionality, and some provide features previously exclusive to the paid versions of Ad-Aware.

It's also important to note that running both Ad-Aware and another anti-spyware program simultaneously can lead to conflicts. Try Ad-Aware Free Edition for a week to assess its performance. It may prove to be the tool you need.
