In our ongoing exploration of free anti-virus utilities, we have previously examined AVG, Avast, AntiVir, and ClamWin. Today, we turn our attention to PC Tools AntiVirus, developed by the creators of the renowned Spyware Doctor anti-spyware program.
Installation Process
The installation of PC Tools AntiVirus is remarkably straightforward. The entire process, including updates, was completed in under two minutes. Currently, version 5.0 is the latest available.
The software utilizes a feature called Smart Updates to ensure the virus definitions are current. This update check is initiated automatically during the installation phase.
User Interface and Functionality
The user interface presents a visually appealing and intuitive experience. All settings and actions related to PC Tools Anti-Virus are readily accessible from a central location.
My initial scan employed the Intelli-Scan feature, which was enabled by default. The scan concluded in less than a minute. However, the scan report indicated that only 1,288 files were examined.
Intelli-Scan focuses on scanning critical system areas and identifying active threats, offering a quick assessment of your PC’s security.
Subsequently, a full system scan was performed, completing in under 15 minutes. This represents the fastest scan time observed among the utilities we have reviewed.
Scheduling and Scan Options
The software allows for scheduled scans, which can be configured to run daily, weekly, or monthly, at user-defined times.
Users have the flexibility to choose between a full system scan, Intelli-Scan, or a custom scan, enabling them to specify the files and directories to be examined.
Final Thoughts
PC Tools Anti-Virus Free Edition appears to be a viable option for anti-virus protection. The features offered are comparable to other free utilities, though not as extensive and are not all activated by default.
