Scope AR Launches Enterprise AR Creation Platform

The Growing Adoption of Augmented Reality in Enterprise

Initially, convincing large enterprises to adopt augmented reality (AR) proved more challenging than anticipated for many AR startups. However, with the increasing availability and affordability of both the hardware and software powering this technology, businesses are now discovering applications that complement their evolving remote work strategies.

Scope AR's Evolution and New Platform

Since its inception in 2010, Scope AR has championed the use of 3D models to enhance training and collaboration within the manufacturing sector. The company is now focused on establishing a more scalable future by redesigning its core product, WorkLink, for web-based access, as stated by Scope AR CEO Scott Montgomerie.

The newly developed platform, named WorkLink Create, is designed to simplify the creation of 3D content directly on top of CAD models. This eliminates the need for Unity, making the product more accessible to users without extensive technical expertise and those lacking dedicated Unity developers for integration.

Simplifying 3D Content Creation

“While Unity is a powerful tool, it necessitates coding for almost any function,” Montgomerie explained. He positions WorkLink Create as a “more scalable and user-friendly” alternative to competing software solutions.

This browser-based platform enables users to upload 3D files and modify them with annotations, comprehensive instructions, and animations through a straightforward drag-and-drop interface. The system automatically adjusts the level of detail in CAD models to ensure optimal performance across various devices.

Following publication, users can access these models and instructions via WorkLink’s applications for mobile devices and HoloLens.

Scope AR’s specialization in commercial education, on-the-job training, and troubleshooting has experienced a resurgence in interest due to the shift towards virtual meetings prompted by COVID-19 guidelines.

Although AR hasn’t experienced a complete transformation as a result of the pandemic, the surge in remote work following the COVID-19 outbreak has positively impacted Scope AR’s business. The company is expanding its customer base and assisting frontline manufacturing operations in the rapid development and repair of vital medical equipment for COVID-19 testing and treatment.

Adapting to Market Realities

Montgomerie acknowledges that he anticipated a gradual adoption of AR, but the slow uptake of AR headsets has surpassed his initial expectations. This has led the company to prioritize mobile-based AR integrations on smartphones and tablets. Scope AR is also an authorized reseller of the HoloLens 2, although Microsoft offers its own remote collaboration software, Remote Assist, for enterprise users.

Funding and Growth

Scope AR secured a $9.7 million Series A funding round in 2019, contributing to the company’s total funding of nearly $12 million raised from investors to date.
