San Francisco Mayor Calls for Tech Innovation - City as Testbed

San Francisco Embraces Autonomous Vehicle Expansion
Waymo and Zoox robotaxis are increasingly common on San Francisco’s roads, and the city anticipates the arrival of Uber, collaborating with Lucid and Nuro, in the near future.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie has expressed his enthusiasm for this technological influx. He views the city as an ideal location for testing and implementing cutting-edge innovations.
A Hub for Emerging Technologies
“I think we should be the testbed for emerging technology and AI and healthcare tech — and all of it,” Lurie stated during his appearance at TechCrunch Disrupt. “We always have been, and under my leadership, we will continue to lead and lean in.”
Lurie highlighted his satisfaction with the progress achieved by Waymo, the autonomous vehicle technology firm owned by Alphabet, within the Bay Area. He further affirmed the city’s welcoming stance towards other companies in the sector.
Prioritizing Safety and Regulation
While embracing innovation, Lurie emphasized that public safety remains the paramount concern. He clarified that the regulation of autonomous vehicles falls under the jurisdiction of the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
Companies intending to provide and monetize robotaxi services are also required to obtain the necessary permits from the California Public Utilities Commission.
Contrasting Approaches Across Cities
San Francisco’s proactive approach contrasts with the more cautious stance adopted by other municipalities. For example, Boston has contemplated implementing a ban on autonomous vehicles within its city limits.
Economic and Tourism Benefits
Lurie pointed to Waymo’s demonstrated safety record and the positive impact on tourism. The robotaxis have become an attraction, drawing visitors eager to experience driverless transportation.
“Waymo has proven out it is a safe ride,” he explained, adding that expansion to the airport is anticipated, facilitating convenient transport into the city.
Addressing Potential Concerns
Despite the optimistic outlook, potential challenges remain. The Teamsters Union, for instance, has advocated for restrictions on self-driving trucks to safeguard employment opportunities.
A Bullish Vision for the Future
Lurie maintains a positive outlook on the potential of technology to stimulate economic growth and job creation within the city.
“We believe in the future,” he concluded. “The future starts always in San Francisco, and we’re going to lean into it.”
