Sam Altman: Meta Offered $100M to Poach OpenAI Talent

Meta's Pursuit of AI Talent and OpenAI's Response
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has recently been actively recruiting, aiming to build a robust superintelligence team. The focus is on attracting leading AI researchers currently employed by rival organizations.
Reports indicate that Meta is offering substantial compensation packages – potentially exceeding $100 million – to individuals from companies like OpenAI and Google DeepMind. These offers include significant signing bonuses and annual salaries, designed to entice top professionals.
Confirmation from OpenAI's CEO
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, validated these reports during a podcast interview with his brother, Jack Altman. He acknowledged Meta’s aggressive recruitment strategy.
Altman stated, “Meta has begun extending exceptionally large offers to numerous members of our team.” He further clarified the scale of these offers, mentioning signing bonuses of $100 million or more, alongside high annual compensation.
However, Altman expressed satisfaction that, thus far, Meta’s efforts haven’t yielded significant results, noting that none of OpenAI’s key personnel have accepted these proposals.
Reasons for Employee Loyalty
Altman believes OpenAI’s employees assess the company as having a stronger likelihood of achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). They also anticipate OpenAI potentially becoming the more valuable entity in the long run.
He suggested that Meta’s emphasis on high compensation, rather than a core mission focused on AGI development, might hinder the creation of a positive and productive work environment.
Failed Recruitment Attempts
Meta reportedly attempted to recruit Noam Brown, a leading researcher at OpenAI, and Koray Kavukcuoglu, an AI architect from Google. Both of these recruitment endeavors ultimately proved unsuccessful.
OpenAI's Culture of Innovation
Altman emphasized the importance of OpenAI’s innovative culture as a key driver of its success. He contrasted this with Meta’s AI initiatives, suggesting they haven’t achieved the desired outcomes.
While expressing respect for Meta in certain areas, Altman questioned the company’s capacity for genuine innovation, stating he doesn’t believe it’s “a company that’s great at innovation.” He stressed the necessity of continuous innovation to maintain a competitive edge in the AI field.
Challenges for Meta
Altman’s comments underscore the obstacles Meta faces in establishing a thriving AI superintelligence lab. Beyond securing Alexandr Wang as team lead, Meta recently made a substantial investment in Wang’s previous company, Scale AI.
The company has also successfully recruited some prominent AI researchers, including Jack Rae from Google DeepMind and Johan Schalkwyk from Sesame AI. However, significant staffing needs remain.
The Competitive Landscape
Over the next year, Meta will need to rapidly expand its AI team while contending with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind, all operating at full capacity. Furthermore, OpenAI is anticipated to release an open AI model that could potentially widen the gap between the companies.
AI-Powered Social Media
During the podcast, Altman also discussed the potential for an AI-driven social media feed. He expressed interest in developing a social media application that utilizes AI to curate personalized feeds based on user preferences.
This contrasts with the algorithmic feeds commonly found on existing social media platforms.
Competing Social Media Visions
OpenAI is reportedly developing a social networking app internally. Simultaneously, Meta is experimenting with AI-powered social networking through its Meta AI app.
However, the Meta AI app has faced some user confusion, with instances of highly personal conversations being shared publicly.
The future success of AI-powered social networks remains uncertain. Nevertheless, the competition between Zuckerberg and Altman in the AI talent race appears set to intensify.
