Pipedrive Secures Majority Investment from Vista Equity Partners - Reaches Unicorn Status

Pipedrive, a sales CRM solution tailored for small and medium-sized businesses, has recently joined the ranks of European companies achieving unicorn status.

The company, originally established in Estonia and currently operating from New York, has secured a majority investment from Vista Equity Partners, a U.S. private equity firm specializing in enterprise software. This investment signifies a substantial acquisition of Pipedrive by Vista, granting the firm a controlling ownership position. According to multiple sources familiar with the details of the agreement, the transaction establishes Pipedrive’s valuation at $1.5 billion. The official announcement also highlighted the company’s attainment of unicorn status.

Pipedrive’s current investors – Bessemer Venture Partners, Insight Partners, Atomico, DTCP, and Rembrandt Venture Partners – will maintain their roles as minority stakeholders in the company. A Pipedrive representative clarified that this is not a secondary funding round, emphasizing that key investors, along with the company’s founders, Timo Rein and Urmas Purde, remain committed to Pipedrive’s future expansion over the coming years.

However, information from my sources indicates that, as is typical with private equity acquisitions, a number of Pipedrive’s initial shareholders, including employees, management, and early investors, have either sold their shares or reduced their holdings, potentially through a “drag-along” clause within shareholder agreements.

Since its founding in 2010, Pipedrive has distinguished itself by prioritizing the requirements of sales professionals, rather than solely focusing on management needs – a platform created by salespeople, for salespeople. The company has since evolved into a more comprehensive CRM platform, also encompassing marketing functionalities.

The software seamlessly connects with over 100 other business applications, such as Google Apps, Trello, Zapier, Mailchimp, Yesware, and PandaDoc. Pipedrive also leverages artificial intelligence and automation technologies to assist sales teams in efficiently managing leads, tracking deals, and monitoring communications with customers and prospects – all aimed at enhancing profitability.

Achieving widespread acceptance wasn’t immediate. During its Series C funding round in mid-2018, Rein explained to TechCrunch’s Ingrid Lunden that initial skepticism existed regarding Pipedrive’s ability to gain traction in a market dominated by established players like Salesforce and Microsoft.

“When we launched in 2010, many questioned why we would enter a space where Salesforce already held a strong position. However, having spent over a decade in sales ourselves, we understood that the number of features isn’t the defining factor. The key is to find the optimal balance, providing users with the functionality they need in a usable format,” Rein stated. “We’ve demonstrated that users are transitioning from Salesforce and other platforms to Pipedrive. While we may offer fewer features, experienced salespeople recognize that success is largely dependent on individual skill.”

Currently, Pipedrive reports a user base of 95,000 companies. Current CEO Raj Sabhlok commented: “Achieving ‘unicorn’ status and partnering with Vista will empower us to accelerate our mission of supporting SMBs as they embrace digital transformation to fuel growth. We are dedicated to realizing the ambitious vision Pipedrive established earlier this year – to equip our users with robust tools that cover the entire customer journey.”

John Stalder, managing director at Vista Equity Partners, added: “As an increasing number of small and medium-sized businesses seek to accelerate their digital adoption for growth, Pipedrive has consistently proven to be a valuable partner, delivering solutions that drive revenue gains for its customers. We are excited to collaborate with the Pipedrive team and its partners to further expand the business and serve SMBs worldwide.”

This milestone also represents a positive outcome for Atomico, a European venture capital firm founded by Skype’s Niklas Zennström. The firm has seen three of its portfolio companies reach unicorn status this year – Pipedrive, Lilium, and MessageBird. Additionally, another Atomico investment, Klarna, has achieved “decacorn” status, with a valuation of $10.6 billion.

“Pipedrive is now the newest SaaS unicorn originating from Europe and Estonia,” Zennström noted. “Beyond the financial benefits for Pipedrive’s founders, employees, and shareholders, this achievement underscores the company’s mission – initiated by Timo, Urmas, Ragnar, Martin Henk, and Martin Tajur – to empower salespeople globally. We are proud to have supported Pipedrive since leading their Series B round in 2017, and we believe the company is well-positioned to become Europe’s next major global SaaS success story. This conviction led us to increase our investment as part of this latest round and we look forward to continuing the Pipedrive journey with Vista’s guidance. Personally, I am delighted to witness another global leader emerge from Estonia, with several former Skype colleagues in key leadership roles.”
