Rolling Back Device Drivers in Windows XP

Occasionally, updating a device driver in Windows XP can introduce compatibility issues with the existing system configuration. Should you experience functionality problems after a hardware update, reverting to the previously installed driver is a valuable troubleshooting technique.

Throughout my experience in IT, I’ve frequently observed this issue with video and print drivers. However, any hardware component can potentially malfunction due to an incompatible software driver.

Accessing Device Manager

To begin, right-click on "My Computer" on the desktop, select "Properties," and then navigate to "Hardware" before opening "Device Manager."

Alternatively, a quicker method is to type “devmgmt.msc” into the Run dialog box and press OK. This will directly launch Device Manager.

Within Device Manager, locate the specific device exhibiting the problematic behavior. For the purpose of this demonstration, we will utilize the "Integrated Sound Device."

Right-click on the device and choose "Properties" from the context menu.

In the Properties window, select the "Driver" tab. Then, click the "Roll Back Driver" button.

A warning message will appear; acknowledge it to proceed with restoring the driver to its prior version.

This rollback process represents a more focused solution compared to performing a full System Restore. It allows for targeted correction of driver-related issues without affecting other system settings.
