Rocket Lab Launches First Mission of 2021

As of 8:26 PM New Zealand Time (2:30 AM Eastern Standard Time), Rocket Lab successfully completed its 18th mission, marking the company’s first launch of 2021. Designated “Another One Leaves The Crust,” the mission originated from Rocket Lab’s Launch Complex 1, situated on the Mahia Peninsula in New Zealand. The launch carried a single communications microsatellite for OHB Group, a European satellite manufacturer with operations in Germany, Sweden, and the Czech Republic.

Rocket Lab’s launches frequently involve multiple customer payloads utilizing a single Electron launch vehicle. However, this specific mission demonstrates the adaptability of the company’s smaller rocket, enabling it to fulfill the needs of clients even when deploying a single, small satellite. The rocket accurately placed the payload into its intended orbit soon after liftoff.

Rocket Lab is currently engaged in the development and testing of a booster stage recovery system designed to enable the reuse of launch vehicle components in future missions. This particular launch did not incorporate a recovery attempt. Nevertheless, the company has achieved considerable progress in this area, having successfully recovered a booster stage last year. Later in 2021, Rocket Lab anticipates attempting a recovery procedure that includes capturing the returning first stage in mid-air using a helicopter.
