Rocket Lab Acquires ASI: Expanding Space Capabilities | Space News

Rocket Lab Expands Capabilities with Acquisition of Advanced Solutions, Inc.
Rocket Lab has announced the acquisition of Advanced Solutions, Inc. (ASI), a space software firm located in Colorado. The purchase price is $40 million, with potential for up to $5.5 million more contingent on ASI’s performance during the 2021 calendar year.
ASI’s Core Competencies
ASI specializes in the development of flight software for spacecraft. Their offerings encompass crucial areas like guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) systems. Furthermore, they provide software solutions for mission simulation and rigorous testing procedures.
This acquisition is strategically intended to strengthen Rocket Lab’s Space Systems division. It supports the company’s broader objective of establishing itself as a comprehensive, “end-to-end” space service provider.
Building a Comprehensive Space Service
Rocket Lab initially gained prominence through its launch services, leveraging its expertise in the design and operation of the Electron rocket. This has positioned them favorably within the growing commercial launch sector.
Last year’s acquisition of Sinclair Interplanetary further enhanced Rocket Lab’s capabilities, specifically in the development and production of spacecraft hardware. ASI’s extensive experience – spanning over two decades and utilized in numerous orbital and interplanetary missions – now complements these existing strengths.
By integrating ASI’s software expertise, Rocket Lab can offer customers a more complete suite of services. This includes not only launching missions but also assisting with mission planning, thorough testing, and ongoing operational support.
Continued Operations and Expansion
Following the acquisition, the ASI team will remain based in Colorado. The company will continue to operate under the leadership of its founder and CEO, John Cuseo. Existing customer relationships will also be maintained.
This deal also facilitates Rocket Lab’s expansion into the Colorado region. Colorado is a significant hub for both governmental and commercial space industry endeavors, providing access to a skilled workforce and a thriving ecosystem.
