Roblox Now Allows Physical Product Sales in Experiences

Roblox Enables In-Experience Sales of Physical Merchandise
Roblox announced on Thursday the rollout of new Commerce APIs, empowering creators to sell physical merchandise directly within their experiences and games on the platform.
This new capability presents creators with an additional revenue stream, extending beyond virtual item sales or access fees for specific experiences.
Initial Testing and Shopify Partnership
The company initiated testing of in-experience physical merchandise purchases within select branded experiences during the middle of 2024.
In September of the same year, Roblox revealed plans to allow creators to offer physical items within experiences, facilitated by a collaboration with Shopify.
Following a closed beta test, these Commerce APIs are now accessible to all qualifying creators and brands.
Availability and Future Expansion
The option to buy physical products will initially be available in experiences suitable for all ages, specifically for users in the U.S. aged 13 and above.
Roblox intends to onboard additional partners and broaden the feature’s reach to encompass more markets in the coming months.
Benefits for Brands
The Commerce APIs provide brands with a novel avenue for customer engagement.
As an example, the beauty brand Fenty is preparing to launch a shoppable experience within Roblox, featuring an exclusive “Grape Splash” shade of their Gloss Bomb.
Bundling Physical and Digital Items
Eligible creators and brands can now combine physical purchases with corresponding digital items through the new Commerce APIs.
This allows for offerings like a physical hoodie accompanied by its digital counterpart for a user’s avatar.
The Approved Merchandiser Program (AMP)
Roblox’s new Approved Merchandiser Program (AMP) facilitates the connection between real-world or online store purchases and avatar items/accessories on the platform.
Both AMP participation and a designated badge on physical products will serve as verification of authenticity for consumers.
Products bearing this badge will include a code redeemable for a unique digital item related to the intellectual property, usable within Roblox.
A Vision for Social Shopping
“Our vision for the future of shopping is an experience that’s more exciting and social than the traditional online shopping experience,” stated the company in a blog post.
“On Roblox, you can explore virtual stores, try on clothes, and share the experience with others. This naturally builds interest and purchase intent. Now we’re taking it one step further, bridging the gap between virtual and real-world shopping by enabling Roblox users to purchase physical items.”
Early Success with Twin Atlas
Roblox highlights that creator studio Twin Atlas leveraged the Commerce APIs within their games to sell physical products, generating six-figure revenue within the initial weeks.
Approximately 90% of their total orders were completed through their in-game commerce integration, according to Roblox.
