Rivian Spinoff: Mind Robotics Launches - Electric Vehicle News

Rivian Launches Mind Robotics, a New AI and Robotics Venture
Rivian has established its second independent company this year, introducing Mind Robotics, an enterprise dedicated to industrial AI and robotics.
Focus on Industrial AI and Robotics Data
The newly formed entity will concentrate on applying “industrial AI to transform the operational methods of businesses engaged with the physical world.” It will also utilize Rivian’s operational data to create a robotics data flywheel, as detailed in the company’s quarterly shareholder communication released on Tuesday.
Rivian's Strategic Vision
While details remain limited, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe explained during an investor call that the company recognized an opportunity to “develop robotic solutions and products that enhance the efficiency of our manufacturing plant operations.” Scaringe is set to chair the board of directors for Mind Robotics, and Rivian holds a stake in the venture.
The Potential of AI in the Physical World
Scaringe emphasized the significant potential of AI to revolutionize operations within the physical realm, comparing it to the impact of Large Language Models (LLMs) on business processes. He stated that the creation of Mind Robotics reflects a desire for direct control and influence over the development of advanced AI robotics specifically tailored for industrial applications.
Seed Funding and Investors
Mind Robotics has successfully secured $115 million in seed funding, led by venture capital firm Eclipse. Jiten Behl, a partner at Eclipse and former Rivian employee, announced the investment via a LinkedIn post, confirming earlier reports of the firm’s involvement.
Second Spinoff This Year
The launch of Mind Robotics represents the second instance this year where Rivian has created a separate, stand-alone company. Previously, in March, the company spun off its micromobility division as Also Inc., which also received funding from Eclipse and Greenoaks Capital.
Potential Employee Transition
Whether Rivian employees will transition to Mind Robotics, as occurred with Also Inc., remains unclear. A Rivian spokesperson did not provide comment, but the company alluded to this possibility in Tuesday’s shareholder letter.
Leveraging Talent and Innovation
Scaringe highlighted Rivian’s strong technology talent pool and innovation-driven culture as enabling the identification of additional areas for value creation, allowing the company to accelerate its mission on a broader scale while maintaining its core focus.
Growing Investment in Robotics and AI
The fields of robotics and industrial AI are currently attracting substantial investment. Numerous humanoid robotics companies are actively seeking funding and striving to bring products to market, including Tesla. General Motors is also developing its own robotics and AI division.
Limited Public Information
Beyond Rivian’s announcement, very little information is publicly available regarding Mind Robotics’ specific plans. The company currently has a minimal digital presence, with only a trademark application filed. This application broadly covers a wide range of potential uses, from machinery and vehicles to even “incubators for eggs.”
