ResQ Secures $39 Million in Series A Funding

ResQ, a company specializing in comprehensive equipment repair services for over 4,000 restaurant chains – including prominent names like Taco Bell and Tim Hortons – has successfully raised $39 million in a Series A funding round. This investment was co-led by Tiger Global and Canvas Ventures.

The funding round also saw participation from Homebrew, Inovia Capital, and Golden Ventures, arriving shortly after the startup’s previously announced $7.5 million seed round.

Addressing Cost Pressures in the Restaurant Industry

Reducing operational expenses is crucial across all industries, but particularly vital within the restaurant sector. Restaurants typically operate with narrow profit margins and inherent instability. ResQ’s growth trajectory and recent capital raise reflect this need.

Founded by Kuljeev Singh, ResQ delivers “revenue recovery” solutions by streamlining back-of-house operations for its clientele.

ResQ’s Service Model and Market Opportunity

The core of ResQ’s service lies in connecting restaurants with qualified contractors. It then provides a centralized platform for managing communication, processing payments, and ensuring accountability.

The successful IPO of Toast has highlighted the potential for cloud-based software solutions within the restaurant industry.

The Boston-based company was valued at $4.9 billion in early 2020, and its current valuation is approximately $25.81 billion, as reported by various financial sources.

Strategic Positioning and Potential Partnerships

Singh envisions a collaborative relationship with Toast, rather than a competitive one. He emphasizes that Toast primarily focuses on front-of-house operations and point-of-sale systems.

“This isn’t simply a technology product sold to restaurants,” Singh explained. “We are building a marketplace, developing products and services for both local and national contractors… the complexity is substantial.”

ResQ is currently engaging with restaurant technology companies seeking back-of-house solutions, as many strive to offer comprehensive, end-to-end services.

Customer Benefits and Cost Savings

Abid Lallani, president of The Lallani Group and a ResQ customer, stated that the platform has eliminated the need to search for vendors, obtain multiple quotes, and manage extensive vendor communications.

Recent additions to ResQ’s customer base include Fogo de Chão, Marugame Udon, and Akamai Brands.

Navigating Marketplace Challenges and Expansion

As a two-sided marketplace, ResQ faces the inherent challenges of balancing supply and demand. Maintaining a carefully curated network of skilled workers and ensuring service availability across a growing number of locations is critical.

Over the past four months, ResQ has expanded its contractor network by 400% and broadened its operational reach from seven to 36 states.

Addressing Labor Shortages and Evolving Industry Needs

Labor shortages represent an ongoing challenge for ResQ, mirroring the difficulties faced by its restaurant clients. The startup’s focus has shifted towards understanding and addressing the changing needs of the restaurant industry, from large chains to independent establishments.

A key benefit is freeing up staff time. “By reclaiming that time for team members, especially during labor shortages, they can concentrate on growth initiatives, new restaurant openings, or enhancing the guest experience,” Singh noted.
