Recovering a Forgotten Windows Password with the Ultimate Boot CD

Previously, we detailed the process of creating a customized Ultimate Boot CD for Windows, initially designed for XP. However, this CD remains a valuable resource for troubleshooting and repairing Vista-based systems. This article will demonstrate a straightforward method for resetting your password utilizing this bootable CD.

Before proceeding, ensure you have already created your own Ultimate Boot CD. This technique is one of several available for password recovery. We will explore additional methods in future guides, and also discuss preventative measures to safeguard against unauthorized password resets.

Accessing the Password Reset Tool

After booting from the Ultimate Boot CD, navigate to the following path within the start menu: Start \ Programs \ Password Tools. Locate and launch NTPWEdit from this menu.

Upon opening the utility, click the "(Re)open" button. This action will open the SAM file, which stores your Windows user account passwords, displaying a list of registered usernames.

If the SAM file does not open automatically, or if you have a multi-boot configuration, you may need to manually browse to find the correct file location.

Changing the Password

Once your username is visible in the list, select it. Then, click the "Change password" button to initiate the password modification process.

A cautionary note for Vista users: it is generally not recommended to alter the password for the Administrator account.

After successfully changing the password, restart your computer. You should now be able to log in using your newly assigned password.

Important Considerations

Note: If you have previously utilized Windows' built-in encryption features to protect your files, altering your password will render those files inaccessible. In such cases, attempting to crack the original password is the recommended course of action. We will cover password cracking techniques in a subsequent article.
