OpenAI News: Mira Murati Recruits John Schulman

Former OpenAI and Anthropic Executive John Schulman's Next Move

John Schulman, a co-founder of OpenAI, is transitioning to a new venture following a brief stint at Anthropic. Reports indicate he departed Anthropic just last week after only five months with the company.

According to Fortune, Schulman is joining Mira Murati, the former CTO of OpenAI, at her newly established and currently discreet startup.

Details Remain Scarce

The precise nature of Schulman’s position within Murati’s company remains undisclosed. Fortune’s inquiries were unsuccessful in obtaining this information.

Murati herself has maintained confidentiality regarding the specifics of her new endeavor since her departure from OpenAI in September.

However, a source revealed to Fortune that Murati has been actively assembling a team of former OpenAI employees.

Additional OpenAI Alumni Join the Effort

Among those recruited is Christian Gibson, who previously contributed to OpenAI’s supercomputing infrastructure.

In October, reports surfaced suggesting Murati was seeking to secure over $100 million in funding for her company.

Schulman's Prior Moves and Focus

Schulman initially left OpenAI in August of the previous year to join Anthropic. He articulated his reasons for this move on X (formerly Twitter).

His decision was driven by a desire to concentrate more intently on AI alignment – the critical field dedicated to ensuring artificial intelligence operates as designed – and to participate in more direct, technical development work.

Schulman is widely recognized as a key figure in the development of ChatGPT, a leading conversational AI model.
